Remote Sensing Data Scientist at Muon Space (Hybrid)

Muon Space is hiring a geospatial data scientist to create derived products from infrared satellite missions. The role develops Python-based geospatial algorithms and production pipelines supporting wildfire and environmental monitoring.

Description

  • Develop derived data products from Muon Space’s infrared imaging missions across its infrared programs.
  • Build and refine scalable algorithms that process, transform, and analyze multispectral infrared imagery into derived geospatial products.
  • Help shape derived-product designs and roadmaps in collaboration with senior scientists and product owners.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and customer-facing design materials.
  • Engage with customer technical stakeholders through Technical Interchange Meetings, customer questions, and program meetings.
  • Develop production-ready software for customer-facing data-product pipelines and operational services.
  • Support scientific quality, quantitative validation, and the integrity of derived products.
  • Work with software engineers, calibration scientists, and instrument engineers to design, build, and maintain operational data-product services.
  • Develop expertise in sensor geometry, georeferencing, wildfire and environmental monitoring, and cloud-native geospatial data engineering.

Requirements

  • PhD, or an MS with at least 3 years of industry experience, or a BS with at least 5 years of industry experience.
  • Practical experience developing geospatial data products, especially from new or novel imaging instruments.
  • Proven ability to apply first-principles reasoning to complex problems.
  • Experience working with real-world data from new or novel imaging instruments.
  • Strong Python development and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency with Python-based geospatial formats and libraries such as COGs, Xarray, and GDAL.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A record of effective collaboration across distributed, interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work effectively within a distributed, interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to prioritize, adapt, and perform well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must meet applicable ITAR/EAR requirements as a U.S. person, as someone eligible to access export-controlled information without authorization, or as someone eligible and reasonably likely to obtain the required export authorization.
