Principal SCADA Engineer — Vancouver, Onsite

Lead technical governance for Qualus utility and renewable-energy power infrastructure projects. Direct substation automation design approvals, commissioning strategy, technical escalation, and engineering mentorship.

Description

  • Serve as Qualus’s Automation Protection and Control subject-matter expert across multiple projects and programs
  • Establish and maintain automation standards and best practices for high-voltage substations
  • Act as Principal Engineer or Technical Authority for complex, high-risk, and non-standard projects, providing final technical direction and approval
  • Review and approve protection planning, philosophy, and application documentation
  • Review and approve one-lines, schematics, logic diagrams, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams
  • Review and approve configurations for RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, embedded controllers, and communications systems
  • Lead or participate in senior design reviews, hazard and risk assessments, and near-miss investigations
  • Guide project teams on construction sequencing, outage planning, and commissioning approaches
  • Oversee technical aspects of project scopes, feasibility studies, cost estimates, and definition-phase deliverables
  • Support business development with proposal technical strategies, execution plans, and risk assessments
  • Serve as a primary technical escalation contact for clients, internal teams, and external partners
  • Mentor engineers at different career stages and improve automation standards, tools, and engineering practices

Requirements

  • At least 20 years of utility-focused protection, control, and metering engineering experience with system-level responsibility
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
  • Canadian Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration or eligibility; U.S. PE registration is an asset
  • Expertise in substation protection philosophy covering transmission lines, transformers, buses, and feeders
  • Extensive experience with EMS, DMS, SCADA masters, RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, telemetry, and communications protocols
  • Strong knowledge of DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, and related utility protocols
  • Experience conducting protection coordination studies and developing relay settings for high-voltage transmission systems
  • Demonstrated success in system architecture, field commissioning, troubleshooting, and stakeholder engagement
  • Hands-on experience with substation construction, commissioning, outage planning, and operational interfaces
  • Ability to exercise sound technical judgment on complex, non-standard, and first-of-kind applications
  • Strong understanding of NERC compliance and its effect on design activities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • EPC project experience and familiarity with utility maintenance and operations are strong assets
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor others
