Principal Data Architect – Azure & Databricks, Remote

Lead Azure and Databricks architecture for a Veterans Affairs AI platform. Build governed data systems supporting healthcare reporting, analytics, and machine learning.

Description

  • Lead customer architecture discussions, brief VA stakeholders, and translate needs into actionable designs and decisions
  • Mentor senior data engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and hands-on problem solving
  • Define ingestion, storage, modeling, and serving standards using Azure Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Databricks, and Delta Lake
  • Guide the platform migration to Azure Commercial with Databricks as the engineering platform and Unity Catalog for governance
  • Design metadata-driven frameworks for thousands of tables across batch, incremental, CDC, and streaming patterns
  • Support reporting and machine learning through Synapse Dedicated Pool, Databricks SQL, Power BI, and model training pipelines
  • Safeguard PHI and PII through access policies, masking, and ATO support aligned with HIPAA and federal security requirements
  • Develop architecture and technical approach content for proposals

Requirements

  • 12+ years of data engineering and architecture experience, including hands-on engineering and at least 5 years as a lead or principal architect
  • Track record of leading engineering teams, mentoring senior engineers, and setting technical direction
  • Demonstrated customer-facing experience leading architecture discussions, briefing executives, and communicating with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Expert hands-on experience with Azure cloud data engineering and warehousing, including Azure Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Synapse Dedicated Pool, Databricks, Delta Lake, and ADLS Gen2
  • Hands-on experience designing Unity Catalog with catalogs and grants, attribute-based access control, row filters, column masks, and lineage
  • Experience designing lakehouse medallion architectures, data warehouse models, and metadata-driven frameworks spanning thousands of tables
  • Strong SQL and Python, including PySpark, skills
  • Experience with CDC, streaming, and incremental loading patterns, such as Oracle GoldenGate, Azure Event Hubs, and Apache Kafka
  • Experience migrating large on-premises data warehouses to the cloud, including parallel runs and reconciliation
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code for data platforms, such as Terraform and Databricks Asset Bundles
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA, NIST 800-53, and FISMA requirements for PHI and PII
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field
  • United States citizenship required
  • Ability to obtain a public trust clearance
  • Eligibility to work in the United States required
