Patient Care Technician – Dialysis (Onsite)

Provide supervised hemodialysis care for patients at Fresenius Medical Care. Operate dialysis equipment, monitor treatment responses, document clinical information, and support transitional care.

Description

  • Deliver safe dialysis treatment under the direct oversight of a licensed nurse
  • Prepare and operate hemodialysis equipment
  • Help maintain a clean and safe clinical environment
  • Participate in Quality Enhancement Program and Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives
  • Educate patients about adequacy measures, disease processes, and vascular access
  • Welcome assigned patients and assess their overall wellbeing
  • Assess vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin when delegated or permitted by state law
  • Record pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access findings
  • Start and end dialysis treatments in line with prescribed orders and established procedures
  • Observe patient responses, identify intradialytic issues, and carry out prescribed interventions
  • Program dialysis machines for ultrafiltration targets, treatment duration, and UF modeling
  • Complete machine safety inspections and verify that alarms are active
  • Record treatment settings, assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately and promptly
  • Escalate material information, condition changes, and unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor
  • Collect ordered laboratory tests and prepare, label, store, and arrange specimen collection
  • Clean blood spills and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and nearby surfaces
  • Use supplies and equipment efficiently and appropriately
  • Observe patients completing self-care while supervised by an RN
  • Help train eligible direct patient care staff under nursing supervision
  • Maintain CQI participation records and enter treatment data in the assigned clinical system
  • Check treatment sheets and resolve missing signatures or incomplete entries
  • Prepare patient charts and laboratory requisitions
  • Support infection-control audits, procedures, policies, and education for patients and families
  • Track newly admitted patients during their first four dialysis weeks and coordinate transitional care
  • Reinforce information about care, treatment choices, home dialysis products, and home dialysis
  • Coordinate the patient experience and disciplinary visits with FKC staff
  • Set up and deliver treatments using Transitional Care Unit machines
  • Demonstrate peritoneal dialysis setup and support transitions to the patient’s selected modality
  • Help order and manage inventory for the Transitional Care Unit

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required
  • Meet CMS-approved state or national certification requirements within the applicable state or CMS timeframe
  • Hold all required state licensure, education, and training
  • Show commitment to the organization’s culture, values, and customer-service standards
  • Prior patient-care experience in a hospital or related setting is preferred
  • Remain employed contingent on successfully completing the organization’s dialysis training program
  • Remain employed contingent on successfully completing CPR certification
  • Pass the Ishihara color-vision test as a condition of employment; reasonable accommodations may be considered
  • Be able to provide direct care requiring heavy lifting, patient transfers, and ambulation assistance
  • Be able to stand frequently for extended periods and bend over
  • Be able to occasionally push and pull equipment with up to 15 pounds of force
  • Be able to frequently lift and lower solutions weighing up to 30 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds to a height of 5 feet
  • Be able to travel between assigned facilities and community locations
