Heriot-Watt University Student Union is an independent, democratic, student-led non-profit serving more than 10,000 students across three campuses in Scotland. Its work extends beyond academic life, combining student representation and support with hospitality and food and beverage services, advice resources, events, societies, volunteering, and personal development opportunities. Through initiatives such as The Advice Hub and its programme of activities, the Union helps students engage with university life, access practical guidance, and build connections across the Heriot-Watt community.

Part-Time Enterprise Executive – Converge Programmes

Lead the development and restructuring of Converge entrepreneurship programmes at Heriot-Watt University. Build training, partnerships and support for Scottish university spinouts, start-ups and aspiring academic entrepreneurs.

Description

  • Provide enterprise support and activities for aspiring academic entrepreneurs across Scottish universities
  • Help restructure the Converge programmes from 2027
  • Contribute to a new training framework and its supporting content
  • Develop partnerships that advance the restructured programmes
  • Project-manage the framework design for the KickStart Challenge for early-stage business ideas
  • Create training materials for the KickStart Challenge
  • Project-manage framework design and supplier procurement for the Converge Challenge programme
  • Assist with delivering the Converge programmes and related activities
  • Collaborate with universities, research institutes, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders
  • Attend occasional evening and weekend activities at different university locations
  • Report to the Deputy Director of Converge

Requirements

  • A relevant higher education degree
  • Experience advising, managing or developing spinouts, start-ups or small companies
  • Experience successfully designing and delivering presentations and workshops
  • Understanding of academic values, with the ability to earn the confidence and support of the academic community
  • Experience coordinating activity across multiple organisations
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with key stakeholders
  • Ability to manage expectations effectively
  • Positive, approachable manner and the ability to maintain respectful relationships with students, staff and alumni from diverse backgrounds
  • Understanding of business idea validation tools such as the Business Model Canvas
  • Understanding of issues related to company formation
  • Understanding of the needs of early-stage entrepreneurs
  • Experience working collaboratively with varied stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to manage an independent workload and meet objectives
  • Ability to use word-processing, spreadsheet, database, email and PowerPoint applications
  • Experience reviewing and writing business plans (desirable)
  • Working knowledge of Scotland’s enterprise network (desirable)
  • Demonstrated project management experience (desirable)
  • Experience commercialising academic research (desirable)
