Mozilla Staff Software Engineer, Web Application Services — Remote (United States)

Lead architecture and technical direction for Thunderbird’s privacy-focused web services, including calendar and secure file storage. Build scalable systems, analytics, and open-source products that support sustainable growth.

Description

  • Own the architecture of new Services products, lead complex projects, and improve evolving systems
  • Develop code, prototypes, and experiments across planning, testing, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance
  • Define software patterns and guide technology decisions across Services products
  • Build analytics and infrastructure that use user-generated data to support informed decisions
  • Address ambiguous, high-impact challenges, including user and subscriber growth
  • Set technical and product direction for Thunderbird while partnering with Mozilla and community contributors
  • Work with colleagues and the community to identify issues, refine ideas, and create practical solutions
  • Plan improvements that increase accessibility, self-service, scalability, sustainability, delegation, and operational efficiency
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, documentation, technical discussions, process improvements, and direct guidance
  • Keep current with technologies, coding standards, libraries, and frameworks
  • Partner with designers, engineers, cross-functional teams, and open-source contributors to develop privacy-focused products beyond email

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of web software development experience, including scalable system design and launching complex web projects
  • Expert JavaScript proficiency plus experience with another language such as Python, Rust, Go, or C++
  • Business awareness and experience partnering with teams to grow Thunderbird’s user and donor base
  • Experience with front-end frameworks, full-stack engineering, and/or API development
  • Strong command of software development practices, including testing, code review, and documentation
  • Background as a technical lead who solves complex problems and mentors and guides engineers
  • Experience working remotely with engineering, product management, QA, and design teams
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication and documentation skills
  • Comfort working in open source and alignment with Mozilla values
  • Ability to assess, learn, and responsibly apply emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and awareness of industry and technology developments
  • Willingness and ability to travel periodically, including internationally
  • Residence in the specified country locations, permanent work authorization, and no need for visa sponsorship
