Director of Technology, Chief Architect - High 5 Games (Remote Poland)

Lead the architecture of High 5 Games’ cloud casino gaming platform in a remote Poland role. Set direction for Java microservices, real-time transactions, platform reliability, and engineering teams.

Description

  • Define the technical vision for a cloud platform comprising hundreds of Java microservices and assume ownership of its architecture.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the production platform during the first 90 days by working closely with the teams that built it.
  • Take responsibility for the architecture progressively, beginning with data and transaction systems, followed by service architecture and the cloud platform.
  • Own the platform architecture end to end by the end of the first year and guide its long-term evolution.
  • Design systems, review code and schemas, establish engineering standards, and lead engineering and technology teams.
  • Present technology strategies and trade-offs clearly to executives, business stakeholders, and regulators.
  • Lead microservices architecture, including service boundaries, APIs, data ownership, and communication between services.
  • Design high-volume, low-latency transaction systems with strong consistency and idempotency guarantees.
  • Establish approaches for distributed transactions, retries, and recovery from failures.
  • Direct architecture reviews and maintain decision records across hundreds of services.
  • Reduce architectural debt and modernize legacy services without interrupting live traffic.
  • Define Java engineering standards covering frameworks, libraries, build systems, coding practices, and JVM tuning.
  • Set database strategy across relational, NoSQL, caching, and streaming technologies.
  • Investigate and resolve performance constraints across the JVM, network, and data layers.
  • Guide cloud architecture across containers, Kubernetes, managed data services, networking, and infrastructure as code.
  • Establish service-level objectives, observability standards, and incident response practices.
  • Improve scalability, resilience, disaster recovery, and cloud cost efficiency.
  • Ensure security, data protection, and auditability satisfy gaming regulation and payment requirements.
  • Build, manage, and mentor engineering and technology teams while raising hiring standards.
  • Convert business objectives into technology roadmaps and delivery plans.
  • Oversee technical vendors and third-party platforms.
  • Assess emerging technologies and tools.
  • Communicate technology strategy and risk to the CEO, executives, and partners.

Requirements

  • At least 12 years of software engineering experience, including 5 or more years architecting large distributed systems.
  • Expertise in Java 17 or later, with deep knowledge of Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, concurrency, JVM performance tuning, and garbage collection.
  • A demonstrated record of designing and operating more than 100 microservices in production.
  • Hands-on experience with systems processing millions of real-time transactions daily against measurable latency and availability targets.
  • Strong database expertise across PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle, including query tuning, indexing, sharding, and replication, plus NoSQL and caching technologies such as Cassandra, MongoDB, DynamoDB, or Redis.
  • Experience with event-driven architecture using Kafka or a comparable streaming platform.
  • Production experience with AWS or GCP, Docker, Kubernetes, and infrastructure as code such as Terraform.
  • Strong understanding of distributed-systems concepts including consistency models, idempotency, partitioning, backpressure, and failure modes.
  • Experience designing REST or gRPC APIs, and familiarity with API gateways and service mesh concepts.
  • Practical observability and reliability experience with Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Datadog, or similar tools, including SLOs and incident management.
  • Experience leading and expanding engineering teams, and assessing and interviewing technical candidates.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with executives, peers, and individual contributors.
  • Experience in gaming, iGaming, sweepstakes or social casino, sports betting, fintech, or payments is preferred.
  • Experience with wallet, ledger, or payment systems requiring complete transaction reconciliation is preferred.
  • Familiarity with gaming regulations, PCI DSS, or SOC 2 compliance is preferred.
  • Experience leading a zero-downtime migration or re-platforming from a monolith or legacy services to microservices is preferred.
  • Experience with reactive or non-blocking Java technologies such as WebFlux, Vert.x, or Netty for high-throughput services is preferred.
