Data Historian Integration Systems Engineer – San Diego Onsite

Bachem is seeking a Data Historian Integration Systems Engineer to manage AVEVA PI systems supporting peptide and oligonucleotide manufacturing. The role connects production automation with enterprise IT in a regulated pharmaceutical environment.

Description

  • Own the complete AVEVA PI Data Historian lifecycle, from architecture and development through installation, commissioning, maintenance, upgrades, and retirement
  • Deploy PI infrastructure for new manufacturing sites, start-ups, brownfield projects, and facility expansions
  • Build and improve historian and integration solutions linking OT equipment, PLCs, SCADA, DCS, MES, automation platforms, and enterprise IT applications
  • Direct PI System design, validation, commissioning, and operational readiness activities
  • Convert business and manufacturing needs into scalable PI tags, AF structures, event frames, data models, interfaces, connectors, and scripts
  • Manage incident, change, and problem processes while troubleshooting complex industrial data and integration failures
  • Contribute to GMP, CSV, commissioning, and qualification work while keeping required documentation current
  • Operate a 24/7 PI environment with a focus on availability, performance, reliability, and disaster recovery preparedness
  • Partner with automation, infrastructure, cybersecurity, manufacturing, digitalization, vendors, integrators, and engineering stakeholders
  • Evaluate platform performance, deliver improvements, advise technical teams, and act as a subject matter expert during audits and inspections

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science, information technology, automation engineering, or a comparable technical discipline
  • Four to six years of hands-on PI Historian engineering, systems integration, and technical project delivery experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Practical experience with AVEVA PI Data Historian, including PI Server, PI AF, PI Vision, Interfaces, Connectors, and Adaptors
  • Solid knowledge of historian architecture, industrial data integration, real-time data management, contextualization, visualization, reporting, and analytics
  • Experience connecting OT equipment, PLCs, SCADA, DCS, MES, automation, and manufacturing integration platforms with enterprise IT systems
  • Working knowledge of OPC DA/UA, Modbus, MQTT, BACnet, Ethernet/IP, and other industrial communication protocols
  • Project experience delivering new manufacturing sites, commissioning programs, major production expansions, or digital manufacturing initiatives
  • Experience administering business-critical applications in regulated manufacturing, including Windows Server, virtualization, networking, Active Directory, backup and recovery, and cybersecurity
  • Familiarity with Computerized System Validation, GMP controls, and data integrity expectations in regulated industries
  • Ability to use PowerShell or Python for system administration, scripting, and workflow automation
  • Strong diagnostic, analytical, communication, and collaboration abilities across IT, OT, cross-functional, and global project teams
