Credit Risk Management Analyst - Toronto Hybrid

Analyze and improve credit-line assignment and increase strategies for American Express Canada’s consumer and small-business portfolios. Monitor risk, profitability, governance, and customer outcomes to support responsible lending decisions.

Description

  • Develop and refine initial credit-line assignment strategies for new accounts using application data, internal information, bureau data, risk scores, debt capacity, and other relevant factors.
  • Create and oversee proactive and reactive line-increase strategies for existing customers, considering risk eligibility, income, tenure, spending, repayment behavior, exposure, and affordability.
  • Assess credit-line proposals against risk-adjusted profitability, customer suitability, and sustainable lending standards while complying with approved risk appetite, policies, procedures, and delegated authorities.
  • Perform portfolio analysis, segmentation, and performance monitoring across approval rates, credit-line sizes, utilization, delinquency, write-offs, and related outcomes.
  • Detect emerging risks, trends, and opportunities, then recommend updates to decision rules, models, cutoffs, caps, suppressions, and other strategy settings.
  • Produce supporting documentation, management reports, and governance materials covering rationale, impact, controls, and timely escalation of significant trends or exceptions.
  • Collaborate with Decision Science, the Centre of Excellence, Technology, Product, Finance, Compliance, Legal, Credit Operations, and other partners to implement strategies and deliver required capabilities.
  • Assist with validation, testing, implementation, and post-launch monitoring for automated decision strategies and associated controls.
  • Protect process rigor and data quality while supporting policy, procedure, audit, regulatory, and control work.
  • Convert complex analysis into clear recommendations for senior leaders and shape decisions through evidence-based insights.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative or business field such as Statistics, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline; an advanced degree is advantageous.
  • Professional experience in credit risk management, underwriting, lending strategy, customer management, portfolio analytics, or a related financial-services area.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, including experience interpreting large datasets, recognizing meaningful patterns, and turning findings into practical risk strategies.
  • Proficiency with SQL, Python, R, or comparable analytical tools, along with advanced Excel skills; data visualization experience is advantageous.
  • Working knowledge of credit bureau data, risk scores, underwriting, line assignment, affordability or debt-capacity analysis, and portfolio performance measures.
  • Ability to balance growth, profitability, customer experience, and credit risk within defined governance and regulatory frameworks.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present analytical findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Careful attention to detail, sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a collaborative setting.
  • Knowledge of Canadian consumer lending and the applicable regulatory environment is advantageous.
  • Must be eligible to work for American Express; visa sponsorship is not available for these positions.
