Commercial Surety Underwriting Specialist (Remote)

Manage complex commercial surety portfolios, assess and price bond risks, and build agency relationships for The Hanover Insurance Group. Support profitable growth and account retention across Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Description

  • Manage and expand an assigned portfolio of moderately to highly complex commercial surety business
  • Source, underwrite, and retain profitable new and renewal accounts within established underwriting and portfolio guidelines
  • Build productive relationships with agencies, brokers, and clients to drive growth and retention
  • Assess financial statements, operational exposures, bond obligations, and risk controls to reach well-founded underwriting decisions
  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders to review complex submissions and secure necessary approvals
  • Apply underwriting practices covering risk selection, exposure evaluation, bond forms, loss analysis, and pricing
  • Explain underwriting decisions, terms, and recommendations clearly to agents and brokers
  • Track portfolio results against premium, profitability, retention, product mix, and new-business targets
  • Incorporate market and competitor insights into underwriting decisions and producer relationship strategies
  • Promote Hanover’s surety offerings and identify cross-business-unit opportunities
  • Monitor industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes affecting the territory

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable professional experience
  • At least 2 years of experience underwriting commercial surety, with 2–5 or more years preferred
  • Two to four or more years of successful agency relationship management and business development experience
  • Solid knowledge of commercial surety underwriting, financial analysis, pricing, and portfolio management
  • Proven ability to assess and negotiate complex surety risks
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including confidence explaining technical underwriting decisions
  • Well-developed analytical, problem-solving, negotiation, and relationship-management skills
  • Adaptability in changing business environments and openness to new methods and ideas
  • AFSB designation preferred
