Backend Engineer, Kotlin and Spring Boot, Hybrid London

Build resilient Kotlin and Spring Boot backend services for Synthesized’s agentic AI software-testing platform. Scale PostgreSQL-backed control-plane systems through reliable APIs and CI/CD.

Description

  • Develop and maintain fault-tolerant, scalable Spring Boot services in Kotlin using clean architectural principles.
  • Design, extend, and optimize PostgreSQL data models.
  • Oversee Liquibase schema migrations and apply jOOQ for type-safe database access.
  • Share ownership of OpenAPI contracts across teams to support automated code generation.
  • Adopt shift-left testing with JUnit, Testcontainers, and MockMVC.
  • Produce clear documentation as features are developed.
  • Contribute to the evolution and improvement of GitHub Actions CI/CD workflows.
  • Partner with Product, Design, and Frontend to clarify requirements and deliver incrementally.
  • Take part in code reviews, mentor colleagues, and help guide architectural decisions.
  • Observe production systems, investigate incidents, and apply operational lessons to improve the platform.

Requirements

  • Production experience delivering Kotlin or Java services with Spring Boot.
  • Advanced PostgreSQL capability, including schema design, indexing, and migrations.
  • Working knowledge of jOOQ and Liquibase or comparable tools.
  • Ability to produce clean, testable code and apply effective test-coverage practices.
  • Practical experience with OpenAPI and automated code-generation workflows.
  • Experience with GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native practices including containers, observability, and REST or gRPC APIs.
  • Understanding of resilient distributed-system design.
  • JVM tuning experience is advantageous.
  • Frontend knowledge or an interest in full-stack development is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical choices clearly.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, clean code, and delivering value through small, rapid iterations.
