Structural Engineering Intern – Oakland, CA (Onsite)

Support Moffatt & Nichol’s waterfront infrastructure work as a structural engineering intern. Contribute to marine structure design, calculations, drawings, quantity estimates, and inspection reporting.

Description

  • Analyze and design waterfront structures, conduct inspections, and assist with other maritime engineering assignments
  • Perform structural analysis and design for marine facilities such as piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, offshore platforms, dolphins, catwalks, utility supports, drainage structures, retaining walls, towers, and foundations
  • Apply timber, structural steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete, aluminum, and composite materials in design work
  • Contribute to project plans, specifications, calculations, and technical reports
  • Investigate and help resolve design issues through fieldwork, inspections, detailed design, computation checks, and coordination across project elements
  • Prepare construction quantity estimates
  • Work with architects, engineers, scientists, project managers, and other technical disciplines
  • Complete structural and construction site inspections and document findings in inspection reports
  • Assist with construction administration by reviewing shop drawings and technical submittals
  • Develop basic drawings, models, calculations, data sets, or code for project deliverables under direct supervision

Requirements

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in structural engineering or civil engineering with a structural emphasis
  • Entering the final year of a qualifying bachelor’s degree program after the summer employment period
  • Master’s degree students are preferred
  • Completed coursework in engineering materials
  • Completed coursework in structural analysis
  • Completed at least one materials design course in reinforced concrete or structural steel
  • Working toward an EIT certification or already holding one, preferably
  • At least one related prior internship is preferred but not required
  • Experience conducting field investigations is preferred
  • Preferred experience with AutoCAD, SAP2000, LPile, Mathcad, and Bluebeam
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills
  • Must successfully complete and pass a post-offer pre-employment background check compliant with NIST 800-171
  • Must be legally eligible to obtain employment in the United States and provide required documentation upon hire
