Staff Software Engineer - Remote in New York

Lead architecture and hands-on engineering for Independence Pet Group’s pet-health insurance platforms. Strengthen Azure applications, reliability, engineering standards, and technical delivery across teams.

Description

  • Provide technical leadership across multiple engineering teams and product areas
  • Lead solution design and architectural decisions for new development, integrations, modernization, and platform improvements
  • Shape technical direction and engineering standards in partnership with the Software Engineering Manager
  • Assess technical tradeoffs and recommend scalable, maintainable, secure, and reliable solutions
  • Build and support .NET/C#, Azure, API, web application, and data-platform solutions
  • Write code for complex, high-impact, cross-platform initiatives
  • Support customer-facing applications, policy and claims platforms, integrations, and mobile applications
  • Create prototypes and reference implementations
  • Diagnose complex application, integration, performance, and production issues
  • Conduct code and design reviews
  • Promote standards for software design, coding, APIs, integrations, testing, observability, resiliency, security, cloud-native development, and source control
  • Identify technical debt and prioritize remediation with engineering leadership and Product
  • Enhance Azure solutions, CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, release quality, and environment consistency
  • Support logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and application performance monitoring
  • Investigate critical production incidents, resolve them, and help prevent recurrence
  • Act as a technical escalation point across engineering verticals
  • Coordinate collaboration among Engineering, Product, QA, DevOps, Architecture, Security, and Operations
  • Mentor software and senior engineers through reviews, design sessions, pairing, and technical coaching
  • Promote cross-training and knowledge sharing
  • Define modernization and refactoring approaches for legacy architecture and software
  • Lead improvements to APIs, integrations, applications, and shared services
  • Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, technical discovery, and delivery through Azure DevOps
  • Work with Product Owners and business stakeholders to turn requirements into technically sound solutions
  • Prepare estimates, identify dependencies, and communicate implementation risks and tradeoffs

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
  • Substantial professional software engineering experience with progression into senior technical leadership
  • Advanced hands-on experience developing applications with .NET and C#
  • Strong experience building cloud solutions on Microsoft Azure
  • Experience designing APIs, integrations, distributed applications, and enterprise software systems
  • Strong command of software architecture, object-oriented design, design patterns, and modern engineering practices
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and contemporary deployment methods
  • Strong experience with SQL Server, relational data modeling, and application performance
  • Experience diagnosing complex production applications and distributed systems
  • Ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams without direct managerial authority
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical topics to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Preferred: experience with policy administration, claims, insurance, financial services, or regulated enterprise platforms
  • Preferred: experience modernizing legacy .NET applications and architectures
  • Preferred: experience with Microsoft Dynamics and enterprise integrations
  • Preferred: experience with modern front-end frameworks and web application architecture
  • Preferred: experience supporting or developing native iOS and/or Android applications
  • Preferred: experience designing reusable APIs and integration platforms
  • Preferred: experience in application performance monitoring, observability, reliability engineering, and production support
  • Preferred: experience collaborating with distributed or offshore engineering teams
