Staff Software Engineer, Canada (Remote)

Lead architecture, modernization, and production delivery for Tag Software Group’s enterprise platform. Guide a lean engineering team working across cloud and on-premises environments.

Description

  • Own system architecture and design decisions.
  • Modernize legacy systems into maintainable architectures that support cloud deployment.
  • Assess requirements and designs for architectural risks, technical debt, and feasibility.
  • Document solution architecture, including decisions, trade-offs, and rationale.
  • Design and build major system components, delivering production code.
  • Take end-to-end responsibility for delivered work, production health, and incident response.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools for design, coding, and documentation.
  • Delegate tasks and contribute to the broader engineering team’s progress.
  • Coach engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and everyday guidance.
  • Provide technical cover for the Head of R&D, taking on wider technical responsibilities over time.
  • Turn unclear customer and enterprise needs into technical designs.
  • Work with product owners, QA, and subject-matter experts.
  • Explain trade-offs, risks, and plans to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Set priorities independently as circumstances and priorities change.
  • Contribute across architecture, coding, mentoring, production support, and other team needs.
  • Take part in and help shape Agile ceremonies.
  • Build with React, TypeScript, .NET, Python, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, API gateways, service meshes, and OIDC identity providers.

Requirements

  • At least eight years of professional software engineering experience, including ownership of architecture and design decisions.
  • Demonstrated success modernizing legacy systems into maintainable architectures that support cloud deployment.
  • Experience across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements and design through implementation, testing, release, and operations.
  • Strong relational database fundamentals, including PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or Oracle.
  • Experience in regulated industries or enterprise software, with an understanding of compliance, data integrity, and audit needs.
  • Sound knowledge of secure coding practices and software design principles.
  • Experience mentoring or informally leading other engineers.
  • Excellent spoken and written English communication with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Hands-on experience designing and owning CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience supporting hybrid deployments across cloud-hosted SaaS and on-premises enterprise environments.
  • Experience with at least two of PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and Oracle.
  • Practical experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Cursor, or similar tools.
  • A track record of exploring and adopting new tools and technologies early.
  • Experience designing or delivering AI or machine learning features in a production application.
  • Ability to work autonomously amid ambiguity.
  • A self-directed, results-focused approach.
