Staff Controls and Automation Engineer — Kennametal, Orwell, Ohio

Lead controls and automation work for Kennametal’s precision manufacturing operations in Orwell, Ohio. The role covers PLCs, robotics, equipment commissioning, safety systems, reliability, and plant-wide automation improvements.

Description

  • Improve and troubleshoot industrial controls and automated manufacturing equipment
  • Program and diagnose PLC systems across Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation, Siemens, and comparable platforms
  • Resolve faults involving sensors, motors, drives, relays, safety circuits, control panels, and electrical systems
  • Maintain compliance with applicable engineering and safety standards for control and electrical systems
  • Support equipment installation, commissioning, startup, and qualification activities
  • Work with equipment suppliers and system integrators to design, implement, and troubleshoot automation solutions
  • Lead or contribute to automation projects improving safety, quality, throughput, reliability, and manufacturing costs
  • Collaborate with electricians, maintenance technicians, manufacturing engineers, and operations teams on process improvements
  • Deliver technical support, training, and mentoring to engineering and technical staff
  • Support equipment and process transfers while advancing automation standards across the organization
  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, control records, I/O lists, and related system documentation
  • Complete and update documentation for newly installed and modified equipment
  • Travel up to 25% based on project activity and support needs at manufacturing facilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in controls engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or a related technical discipline is required
  • At least 10 years of practical experience in controls, electrical, automation, or related manufacturing engineering is preferred
  • Extensive experience with industrial control systems and PLC programming
  • Strong knowledge of industrial robotics, automated material handling, servo systems, VFDs, motion control, and industrial networking
  • Hands-on experience with machine safety systems and safety PLCs is required
  • Practical experience working with industrial manufacturing equipment
  • Experience developing and troubleshooting HMI/SCADA systems is preferred
  • Project management experience is preferred
  • Strong diagnostic ability and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to organize competing priorities and manage time effectively
  • Ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced manufacturing setting
  • Willingness to support multiple manufacturing sites as business needs require
