Software Engineer III, Backend Java – Hybrid in Phoenix

Build scalable Java microservices and REST APIs for American Express’s digital payments platform. Collaborate with Agile teams to deliver secure, reliable payment experiences.

Description

  • Build, test, and maintain scalable Java backend applications and microservices
  • Contribute across user story analysis, technical design, development, testing, and production support within an Agile team
  • Design and integrate RESTful APIs in line with established security and API design practices
  • Produce clean, reusable, maintainable code supported by comprehensive testing
  • Develop efficient data access patterns across relational and NoSQL databases
  • Investigate application issues through log and metric analysis while supporting performance and reliability improvements
  • Review code with fellow engineers and help raise engineering quality and standards
  • Partner with product owners, engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to clarify requirements and deliver robust solutions
  • Evaluate and apply relevant technologies, frameworks, and engineering practices to business challenges
  • Contribute actively to Agile planning, application design, development, testing, and automation

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Five to seven years of software development experience, preferably focused on Java backend applications
  • Knowledge of RESTful API design and development principles
  • Awareness of emerging trends, technologies, and standards in the payments industry
  • Awareness of emerging trends and standards in blockchain and distributed ledger technologies
  • Knowledge of Web3 technologies and ecosystems
  • Experience with or familiarity with Vert.x
  • Familiarity with automated testing tools such as JUnit and Mockito
  • Experience with source control and CI/CD tools such as Git, Jenkins, or equivalent technologies
  • Ability to work effectively with engineers, product owners, and other stakeholders
