Senior Structural Engineer, Bridge Focus — Richmond, VA Onsite
Lead the design of bridges and related transportation structures, including culverts, retaining walls, and sound walls, for Moffatt & Nichol infrastructure projects. Coordinate project teams, resolve design challenges, and support client delivery.
Description
- Prepare plans, specifications, and inspection documentation
- Design bridges and civil transportation structures such as culverts, retaining walls, and sound walls
- Apply quality controls to deliver accurate work on schedule and within budget
- Investigate and resolve design issues through field inspections, detailed design, computation checks, and cross-functional coordination
- Prepare quantity takeoffs and cost estimates
- Direct project tasks through team coordination, scheduling, and supervision
- Partner with other disciplines on multidisciplinary projects
- Communicate directly with clients in meetings, calls, and email
- Work mainly in an office, with occasional site visits involving unpaved or natural terrain and carried equipment
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field is required
- A master’s degree in structural engineering or civil engineering with a structural emphasis is preferred but not required
- At least 10 years of design experience with bridge or marine structures
- Experience designing both bridge and marine structures is advantageous
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration is required
- Experience with VDOT or other Department of Transportation projects is preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- MathCAD and MicroStation or AutoCAD proficiency is required
- Experience with STAAD is required
- Experience with SAP2000, CSiBridge, LARSA 4D, DESCUS, or Bentley LEAP Bridge Suite is preferred
- Successful completion of the post-offer pre-employment background check required under NIST 800-171 compliance
- Legal eligibility to work in the United States and ability to provide required hiring documentation
- Strong planning and communication abilities
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a project team
