Senior SQL Database Administrator (Contract, Remote - United States)

Senior SQL Database Administrator supporting enterprise Microsoft SQL Server and clustered database environments for a federal customer. The contract role covers cloud and on-premises operations, security, performance optimization, and disaster recovery.

Description

  • Administer, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise Microsoft SQL Server environments
  • Administer and maintain SQL Server clusters and standalone SQL databases
  • Create, install, configure, and manage SQL databases and database servers
  • Handle SQL Server installations, configuration, upgrades, patching, and scheduled maintenance
  • Maintain and troubleshoot database high-availability and disaster-recovery solutions
  • Perform advanced SQL Server performance tuning and optimization
  • Evaluate database performance metrics to identify issues involving queries, indexes, configurations, and infrastructure
  • Develop and maintain SQL scripts and database administration automation
  • Design and support database backup, restoration, recovery, and disaster-recovery processes
  • Monitor database health, capacity, availability, and performance with enterprise tools such as Idera and SolarWinds
  • Carry out proactive capacity planning and recommend infrastructure or configuration improvements
  • Troubleshoot database integrations with applications including enterprise platforms such as SharePoint
  • Manage database support requests, incidents, and change requests through ServiceNow
  • Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for complex database incidents
  • Create and maintain database configuration and administration standards
  • Support database security, auditing, encryption, and compliance activities
  • Collaborate with technical teams and customer stakeholders to resolve database issues
  • Participate in scheduled after-hours patching, server reboots, and support activities
  • Document work and contribute to required weekly customer support reports

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in database administration or related database disciplines
  • Advanced experience administering Microsoft SQL Server
  • Hands-on Microsoft SQL Server administration experience
  • Hands-on experience with SQL Server clustering
  • Hands-on experience writing SQL scripts
  • Hands-on experience provisioning and configuring databases
  • Hands-on experience with database backup and restoration
  • Hands-on experience with database performance tuning
  • Hands-on experience patching databases and servers
  • Hands-on experience with high-availability solutions
  • Hands-on experience with disaster-recovery processes
  • Hands-on experience with monitoring and alerting
  • Hands-on experience securing databases
  • Hands-on experience with incident management and root-cause analysis
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical capabilities
  • Ability to independently resolve complex database and server issues
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Current or previous Microsoft or SQL-related professional certification preferred
  • Federal government IT experience preferred
  • Cloud database administration experience preferred
  • ServiceNow experience preferred
  • Experience with Idera and/or SolarWinds preferred
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle, and MS Access preferred
