Senior Software Engineer, Institutional Services — New York Public Library (Hybrid)

Lead development of digital library platforms for The New York Public Library using Python, React, and TypeScript. Build scalable applications that expand access to resources for patrons, researchers, educators, and students.

Description

  • Build and maintain NYPL digital platforms across applications and databases
  • Develop and deliver products with Python, React, and TypeScript
  • Create applications that connect patrons, researchers, educators, and students with digital library resources
  • Maintain legacy systems while building new applications for NYPL collections
  • Establish and maintain standards for application development, database management, collaboration, and related technical practices
  • Assess technical needs and define system specifications
  • Design and implement scalable, efficient, and maintainable software solutions
  • Partner with multiple teams to develop patron-facing applications
  • Work with product and project managers to assess feature feasibility and complexity
  • Participate in agile ceremonies and refine development processes
  • Produce Technical Architecture Documents
  • Clarify and resolve ambiguous or incomplete requirements
  • Research and recommend solutions based on cost, automation, and efficiency considerations
  • Contribute to test suites, technical documentation, and specifications
  • Identify and reduce technical debt
  • Review code and provide constructive, actionable feedback
  • Mentor engineers through technical guidance, pair programming, and code reviews
  • Lead development initiatives and coordinate the work of other engineers
  • Present technical work to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Partner with Software Engineers to deliver new features across NYPL Digital

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or five years of equivalent hands-on development experience with the relevant technology stack
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, coaching, and decision-making abilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience leading significant technical initiatives that address complex problems
  • Experience defining and implementing documentation standards and practices
  • Advanced Python development and system design expertise, including production experience with Python web frameworks
  • Strong knowledge of system architecture, design patterns, and cloud infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of DevOps practices and how they influence implementation decisions
  • Proficiency with SQL and relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL
  • Experience with Node.js and the React ecosystem
  • Experience working with Next.js
  • Experience using multiple component libraries
  • Experience with front-end integration testing
  • Knowledge of accessibility principles
  • Proficiency with Git and version control systems
  • Experience with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions or Travis CI
  • Familiarity with agile frameworks including Scrum and Kanban
  • Familiarity with Single Sign-On is a plus
  • Understanding of or experience managing Single Sign-On infrastructure such as Shibboleth is a plus
  • Large-scale production experience with data stores such as Elasticsearch or Solr is a plus
