Senior Planning and Optimization Advisor Engineer - Findlay, Ohio

Advise on refinery planning and optimization for Marathon Petroleum by evaluating cross-regional scenarios, operating constraints, and value-chain economics. Support commercial strategies and planning decisions across U.S. refinery operations.

Description

  • Analyze market conditions, operating constraints, disruptions, and strategic initiatives through scenario and sensitivity studies.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Commercial, Logistics, and Planning teams to align plans across refineries, regions, and planning horizons.
  • Independently lead refinery planning studies and optimization initiatives.
  • Provide technical direction to less experienced advisors and mentor junior engineers.
  • Oversee cross-regional commercial activities, including feedstock selection, product and intermediate placement, supply chain optimization, and market analysis.
  • Facilitate meetings focused on economic drivers affecting cross-regional operations.
  • Create, optimize, and execute regional plans for multiple refineries using linear programming simulation models.
  • Refine cross-regional model constraints to represent actual operating conditions.
  • Direct buy-or-make evaluations from data collection through recommendations, economic modeling, and sensitivity analysis.
  • Work with Trading to coordinate strategies and improve business outcomes.
  • Present recommendations to regional leaders and secure stakeholder alignment.
  • Independently manage project support cases and develop solutions from complex data analysis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or a bachelor’s degree in another field plus five years of relevant experience.
  • At least four years of experience in refinery planning, optimization, value-chain analysis, operations, commercial activities, logistics, or a related area.
  • Aspen PIMS linear programming experience is preferred.
  • Experience developing or using linear programming models, including PIMS.
  • Advanced knowledge of refinery operations, economics, and cross-regional market conditions.
  • Proficiency in scenario and sensitivity analysis.
  • Ability to build economic models and evaluate risk and uncertainty.
  • Ability to interpret complex data, recognize trends, and independently recommend solutions.
  • Ability to communicate recommendations and build alignment among stakeholders.
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers.
  • Knowledge of commodity markets, pricing dynamics, and supply-and-demand fundamentals.
  • Understanding of integrated planning and optimization processes.
  • Experience with optimization models, quantitative methods, and scenario planning.
