Senior Linux/HPC Systems Administrator — Emory University (Atlanta Hybrid)

Senior Linux and HPC administrator supporting Emory University’s instructional and research computing environments. Manage clusters, Open OnDemand, Slurm, GPU resources, and Linux infrastructure for faculty and students.

Description

  • Plan and deploy operating systems, utilities, and related software across multiple platforms
  • Administer Linux systems supporting instructional and educational computing
  • Maintain HPC clusters and Linux computing environments used by students and faculty
  • Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Open OnDemand environments
  • Administer Slurm workload-management environments, including nodes, partitions, resource allocation, scheduling, and common user issues
  • Partner with faculty and instructors to prepare computing environments for courses
  • Assess resource needs, configure software, provision access, and test environments before instruction begins
  • Deliver advanced technical support to faculty, instructors, teaching assistants, and students
  • Manage Linux accounts, groups, permissions, SSH access, authentication, and centralized identity integrations
  • Install, configure, patch, upgrade, and troubleshoot Linux operating systems and applications
  • Support GPU-enabled computing environments and scheduler-based GPU access
  • Carry out operating system patching, security updates, vulnerability remediation, and routine security administration
  • Monitor system availability, utilization, capacity, and performance
  • Investigate and resolve hardware, operating system, storage, networking, authentication, scheduling, and application issues
  • Create and maintain administration documentation, operating procedures, configuration standards, and user documentation
  • Apply scripting and automation to improve administration, deployment, configuration, and maintenance
  • Contribute to infrastructure upgrades, migrations, hardware deployments, and other computing initiatives
  • Assess emerging technologies and recommend enhancements to instructional computing environments
  • Provide technical direction to junior administrators and student employees
  • Assist with research computing systems as needed

Requirements

  • At least five years of operating systems analysis or administration experience, or a bachelor’s degree with at least three years of such experience
  • Professional experience administering Linux servers or comparable Linux infrastructure
  • Proficiency with the Linux command line and core administration concepts, including filesystems, permissions, processes, services, package management, logging, and system configuration
  • Hands-on experience installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Linux operating systems
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, SSH, and network troubleshooting
  • Experience administering multiuser Linux systems
  • Experience with shell scripting or a general-purpose language such as Bash or Python
  • Ability to independently diagnose and resolve system administration issues
  • Understanding of essential Linux security practices, including patching, access control, privilege management, and vulnerability remediation
  • Ability to clearly document technical configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guidance
  • Effective communication with users across a broad range of technical backgrounds
  • Ability to manage concurrent technical responsibilities and identify when escalation or collaboration is needed
  • Demonstrated capacity to learn and independently use unfamiliar technologies
  • Residency in Georgia
  • Ability to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based on business needs
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, a scientific field, or a related discipline is preferred; equivalent education and experience will also be considered
  • Sufficient Linux and infrastructure experience to investigate unfamiliar systems independently and build proficiency as needed
