Senior JavaScript Software Engineer – American Express, New York Hybrid

Lead React, Node.js, and TypeScript engineering for American Express card-shopping experiences. Shape architecture, experimentation, production quality, and responsible AI-assisted development.

Description

  • Own team-level technical decisions covering architecture, engineering standards, and implementation trade-offs.
  • Establish technical direction across projects and coordinate broader architectural choices with relevant partners.
  • Architect and deliver complex capabilities across the full web application stack.
  • Convert business objectives into technical solutions with Product Owners, engineers, and partner teams.
  • Lead design decisions, record significant architectural rationale, and maintain alignment with team standards.
  • Work with Product Owners, analytics, and design partners to develop testable customer and business hypotheses.
  • Create experimentation capabilities through analytics instrumentation, feature flags, and controlled rollouts.
  • Ensure experiments satisfy performance, accessibility, privacy, and reliability requirements, using results to drive iteration.
  • Develop and enhance secure, scalable, resilient, accessible, and high-performing applications.
  • Advance code quality, automated testing, observability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Collaborate with Site Reliability Engineering on production investigations, root-cause analysis, and durable remediation.
  • Support engineer growth through technical mentoring, code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge sharing.
  • Simplify systems, reduce technical debt, and strengthen team development practices.
  • Assess technologies and frameworks based on customer and engineering value.
  • Lead the responsible use of AI coding agents for implementation, testing, refactoring, documentation, and operational support.
  • Safeguard customer, company, and proprietary information while ensuring generated changes meet security, privacy, licensing, accessibility, and engineering standards.

Requirements

  • At least 9 years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial hands-on work building modern web applications.
  • Proven ability to architect and deliver complex production systems, establish technical direction, and take solutions from initial design through production.
  • Advanced practical knowledge of JavaScript and TypeScript, with deep experience using React and Redux or a comparable state-management solution.
  • Strong experience developing server-side JavaScript or TypeScript with Node.js, REST APIs, and Express.
  • Hands-on experience with automated testing tools such as Jest and Mocha, modern JavaScript practices, and web architecture patterns.
  • Experience designing and operating applications that prioritize scalability, performance, resilience, accessibility, security, and maintainability.
  • Technical leadership experience mentoring engineers, guiding design decisions, and helping teams achieve sound engineering outcomes.
  • Experience with Agile development and DevOps practices, including automated delivery, monitoring, and production support.
  • Strong ownership, communication, and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs across teams.
  • Customer-focused approach with a record of improving digital experiences through engineering quality, automation, and continuous improvement.
  • Openness to modern AI coding assistants or agents, combined with the judgment to review and validate their output critically.
