Senior Energetics Engineer - Remote, United States

Senior Energetics Engineer supporting the modernization of hazardous energetics and ammunition facilities for Salas O’Brien’s federal defense clients. The role leads safety analysis, engineering design, and modernization of ammunition, arms, and explosives systems.

Description

  • Assess existing energetics, propellant, pyrotechnic, chemical processing, utility, and hazardous industrial systems
  • Lead design, analysis, testing, and implementation for systems involving propellants, explosives, pyrotechnics, pressurized gases, and cryogenic fluids
  • Conduct hazardous-area classification studies
  • Apply NFPA and other applicable industry standards to establish electrical area classifications and safety requirements
  • Prepare process safety analyses, hazard assessments, HAZOPs, explosives safety reviews, regulatory compliance evaluations, and risk mitigation plans
  • Support modernization planning for energetics, propellant, pyrotechnic, chemical processing, bulk material handling, and hazardous-operation facilities
  • Assess and document the safe handling, storage, and transportation of unserviceable ammunition and explosives
  • Implement Resource Recovery and Recycling protocols and material disposition requirements
  • Maintain compliance with the EPA Military Munitions Rule and RCRA hazardous-waste shipping requirements
  • Support facility layouts, equipment selection, specifications, technical data-sheet reviews, vendor coordination, technical evaluations, and design documentation
  • Participate in design and safety reviews, operational readiness assessments, site visits, field investigations, technical walkdowns, client workshops, and presentations
  • Assess instrumentation, interlocks, permissives, alarms, remote-operation, and monitoring strategies
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams in integrating energetic-material and hazardous-operation requirements into facility designs
  • Assess storage, transfer, handling, and disposal methods for energetic materials and propellants
  • Lead or perform root-cause investigations and develop corrective actions
  • Support proposals, scope definition, estimates, budgets, schedules, and technical approach narratives for federal opportunities

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline
  • At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in energetics, propellants, pyrotechnics, chemical processing, defense industrial base facilities, or comparable hazardous industrial environments
  • Experience with ammunition, explosives, energetics, propellants, pyrotechnics, chemical manufacturing, or similar commodities is strongly preferred
  • Experience supporting Department of War, federal, defense contractor, aerospace, specialty chemical, advanced manufacturing, or mission-critical industrial clients
  • Experience preparing engineering calculations, technical reports, design criteria, technical narratives, specifications, equipment data sheets, and design documents
  • Experience with explosives safety, hazardous-area classification, process safety analyses, hazard reviews, risk assessments, HAZOP studies, and NFPA 497 requirements
  • Experience working within and leading multidisciplinary engineering teams on complex industrial, federal EPC, design-build, or modernization projects
  • Knowledge of NFPA, OSHA, and industry-specific safety requirements
  • Experience contributing to PHAs, HAZOPs, or comparable risk assessments
  • Ability to obtain and maintain applicable site access, security clearance, or customer-required credentials
  • U.S. citizenship when required for site access to certain DoD-titled AA&E facilities
  • An active or recently held Department of War security clearance is preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel-based engineering calculations, Bluebeam Revu, AutoCAD, and applicable modeling or analytical platforms
  • Proficiency in engineering calculations, process modeling, and technical documentation
  • Ability to conduct site visits and field investigations, enter industrial, manufacturing, and construction environments, occasionally lift up to 25 pounds, and wear required PPE
  • Ability to work across industrial, laboratory, aerospace, test stand, field, hybrid, office, and remote environments
  • Ability to travel 10% to 25% based on project assignments and field activities
