Senior Director, Geospatial Data Services – Remote (Virginia)

Lead National Underground Group’s growth in utility asset mapping and digital infrastructure services. Drive diversification, strategic partnerships, technology innovation, and development of a national team.

Description

  • Create and deliver a three- to five-year strategy for diversifying revenue
  • Establish Utility Asset Mapping and Digital Infrastructure as the core practice
  • Assess potential service lines, acquisitions, partnerships, and market opportunities
  • Expand into adjacent offerings such as GNSS utility asset mapping, GIS, SUE, GPR, utility inspection, construction as-builts, damage prevention consulting, leak detection, and pipeline integrity data services
  • Study market trends and customer requirements while developing business cases and financial models
  • Define annual growth objectives, sales strategies, and revenue projections
  • Manage the practice budget, financial forecasts, and margin results
  • Build strategic relationships with utilities, municipalities, engineering firms, contractors, and government agencies
  • Act as executive sponsor for priority utility clients and present strategic recommendations
  • Contribute to proposal development and major business pursuits
  • Represent National Underground Group at industry conferences
  • Create scalable field-collection processes for survey-grade GPS mapping
  • Set quality assurance and quality control standards for spatial precision and data integrity
  • Direct development of GPS Asset Inventory, Underground Utility GIS Verification, Utility Network Readiness, As-Built Validation, and Facility Record Modernization services
  • Advise on capital spending for equipment and software
  • Oversee vendor and technology-partner relationships, licensing discussions, and platform choices
  • Assess technologies such as mobile LiDAR, GNSS, AI-assisted feature extraction, digital twins, mobile GIS, remote sensing, and reality capture
  • Move pilot programs and innovation efforts through commercialization
  • Develop advanced offerings including Pipeline Traceability, Digital Twin Development, AI Quality Assurance, and Utility Data Governance
  • Recruit, hire, and develop a national workforce of field crews, GIS specialists, and project managers
  • Define productivity expectations, key performance indicators, and performance dashboards
  • Work with operations leaders to scale services and improve utilization, profitability, and productivity
  • Ensure projects meet safety, schedule, and budget expectations
  • Coordinate with utility locating, SUE, surveying, and engineering teams
  • Assist with acquisitions and integration of new service lines
  • Align field and mapping programs with state one-call and 811 requirements and applicable PHMSA and NERC CIP obligations
  • Report to the CEO and present strategies, business cases, and outcomes to executive leadership
  • Conduct recurring business reviews covering pipeline, revenue, delivery quality, and team expansion
  • Lead cross-functional groups, mentor emerging leaders, and encourage entrepreneurial thinking
  • Promote accountability, customer service, continuous improvement, and innovation

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, GIS, surveying, geography, construction management, or a related discipline
  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in utilities, utility services, engineering consulting, GIS or geospatial services, infrastructure, or construction, including substantial leadership responsibility
  • Track record of creating, launching, or scaling a business line, practice, or revenue stream
  • Background in strategic planning and business development leadership
  • Ability to manage P&L or direct budget ownership while delivering growth
  • Experience directing enterprise GIS or utility asset management programs
  • Strong knowledge of underground utility infrastructure, damage prevention, GIS, and asset management
  • Record of successfully leading cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication and executive-level presentation abilities
  • Ability to travel approximately 30%
  • Experience with Esri ArcGIS Enterprise and Utility Network
  • Experience implementing GPS-based asset collection programs
  • Hands-on or program-level experience with mobile LiDAR or reality-capture platforms
  • Experience assessing or integrating acquisitions
  • Knowledge of PHMSA pipeline regulations
  • Familiarity with electric or gas utility operations
  • Established relationships with utility executives
  • PMP certification
  • GISP certification
  • Professional Surveyor or Professional Engineer license preferred, but not required
