Senior Database Engineer (Hybrid, Malta)
Design and operate highly available PostgreSQL and MySQL environments for resilient data services. Automate infrastructure, improve database performance, and support critical production systems.
Description
- Build, enhance, and maintain secure, fault-tolerant PostgreSQL environments across on-premises and RDS, alongside MySQL systems.
- Create and manage database provisioning, configuration, and deployment workflows with Ansible and/or Terraform.
- Administer and troubleshoot multi-region, multi-node replication for PostgreSQL and MySQL.
- Improve query performance, indexing strategies, database engine settings, and schema design.
- Carry out transaction recovery procedures and disaster recovery exercises while maintaining backup, encryption, and privacy controls.
- Track database health and performance, plan capacity, apply maintenance and security updates, and coordinate engine upgrades.
- Define and document database policies, operational practices, schema standards, and runbooks.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, share expertise, and promote strong engineering practices.
- Deliver Tier 3 support for critical production environments and join a 24/7 on-call rotation when required.
Requirements
- At least five years of hands-on experience as a Database Engineer or Database Administrator in production environments.
- Experience in high-throughput sectors such as i-gaming, fintech, or e-commerce is strongly preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of PostgreSQL and MySQL, including internal architecture, engine-specific tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated experience with Ansible for configuration management and orchestration, and Terraform for infrastructure provisioning.
- Practical experience with high-availability technologies such as Patroni, PgBouncer, Galera Cluster, or MySQL InnoDB Cluster/Group Replication.
- Experience managing latency-sensitive, high-concurrency database environments.
- Extensive knowledge of point-in-time recovery, logical and physical backups, security hardening, and data integrity validation.
- Strong Bash, Shell, or Python scripting skills, plus experience with DBA tools and monitoring platforms for frontend and backend systems.
