Senior Customer Design Technician

Plan and design utility equipment and facilities for American Electric Power, supporting safe and reliable energy delivery through fieldwork and engineering analysis.

Description

  • Handle intermediate technical work across the planning, design, analysis, testing, construction, maintenance, and operation of company equipment and facilities.
  • Contribute to resolving routine technical issues and carry out assigned work with guidance from senior colleagues.
  • Plan tasks using AEP’s standard practices and prioritize routine work to meet company needs.
  • Keep work records accurate and use technical knowledge to solve problems.
  • Spot opportunities to improve processes and build technical skills.
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret information to complete work and address problems.
  • Communicate with internal teams and external customers.
  • Help prepare technical reports and papers.
  • Build decision-making skills and learn the responsibilities of the local organization.
  • When required, inspect distribution lines for damage and perform brush clearing and staking for surveys.
  • Patrol distribution power lines to determine damage where required.
  • Perform survey-related brush clearing and staking work where required.
  • Develop decision-making skills and understanding of local organizational responsibilities.
  • Assist in preparing technical reports and papers.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in electrical, electronic, civil, or mechanical engineering technology or a related field, or a high school diploma/GED with the required related utility industry experience.
  • For Associate level: high school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of related utility industry experience, or an associate degree in a related engineering technology field.
  • For Technician level: associate degree plus 2 years of related utility industry experience, or high school diploma/equivalent plus 4 years of related utility industry experience.
  • For Senior level: associate degree plus at least 4 years of related utility industry experience, or high school diploma/GED plus at least 6 years of related utility industry experience, including technical engineering projects.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of standards, codes, regulations, equipment, materials, systems, and business processes.
  • Basic computer literacy and skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability in some locations to walk rights-of-way across varied terrain and in adverse conditions.
  • Ability to carry and handle telescopic measuring and switching sticks weighing 11 pounds.
  • May be required to use a brush axe or machete for brush clearing and survey work.
