Senior Back-End Engineer — Canada Remote

Join Ground News as a senior back-end engineer building scalable services for a platform that compares news sources and media bias. Own backend features, improve reliability, and support safe production releases.

Description

  • Own customer-facing features and products from development through delivery.
  • Ship new developments within weeks of joining the team.
  • Contribute to projects from initial concept and design through implementation and launch.
  • Partner with stakeholders to shape effective solutions.
  • Apply lean and agile development practices.
  • Work collaboratively with teams across the organization.
  • Communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and turn their needs into practical solutions.
  • Design, build, and operate Ground News backend services.
  • Strengthen service observability, reliability, and performance.
  • Report to the Head of Engineering.
  • Contribute within the backend chapter and Core Experience pod.

Requirements

  • Bring at least five years of TypeScript experience, including proficiency with async/await syntax.
  • Have at least three years of Node.js experience.
  • Have at least three years of experience with relational databases, preferably MySQL or Postgres.
  • Have experience with Elasticsearch, Redis/Valkey, or a comparable caching system.
  • Demonstrate a history of shipping and scaling reliable services for a successful consumer product.
  • Know how to plan and execute safe releases, monitor system stability, and reduce operational risk.
  • Show a strong commitment to continued learning and development as an engineer.
  • Use critical thinking to make well-informed technical decisions.
  • Write efficient, scalable code and identify problematic implementation patterns.
  • Be legally authorized to work in Canada.
