Seasonal Education Coordinator – Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Onsite

Seasonal education coordinator role supporting Appalachian Trail hikers at a designated basecamp. The position covers Leave No Trace guidance, food-storage education, visitor support, and coordination with staff, volunteers, and park partners.

Description

  • Report to the Regional Manager
  • Assist registered thru-hikers at the designated basecamp
  • Educate visitors about Leave No Trace, local rules and regulations, proper food storage, and other relevant topics
  • Lead Start Smart video presentations and respond to visitor questions
  • Join weekly check-in calls with ATC partners, volunteers, and internal staff
  • Refresh messaging focus boards using information from partners
  • Demonstrate PCT-style food-storage hangs when requested
  • Provide visitors with ATC Incident Report and Bear Encounter Report Forms
  • Arrange basecamp coverage with the designated Trail Ambassador Coordinator
  • Resolve technology issues related to digital tablet registration
  • Coordinate with park service representatives on Appalachian Trail needs
  • Complete other assignments from the Regional Manager
  • Help maintain consistent educational messaging, food-storage demonstration capacity, and an equitable division of duties with volunteers

Requirements

  • Coursework or academic experience in environmental studies, recreation management, natural resources management, forestry, or a related field is preferred
  • Commitment to Appalachian Trail Conservancy management and resource-protection initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to work with limited supervision
  • Effective communication skills with individuals, groups, and partner organizations
  • Ability to live independently and work in a remote area with limited supervision
  • Strong hiking background and outdoor experience
  • Experience working with volunteers across ages, backgrounds, and skill levels
  • Working knowledge of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s cooperative management system is preferred
  • Leave No Trace Trainer or Master Educator credentials are desirable; awareness training is provided
  • Current Wilderness First Aid or higher certification and CPR certification are preferred; training is provided
  • Willingness to complete additional required training, including USFS chainsaw and crosscut saw certification, WFR/WFA, advanced rockwork, rigging, and safe driving
  • Ability to hike for extended periods and routinely lift or carry up to 50 pounds in a backpack for at least five miles across rough, uneven, wet, and slippery terrain
  • Regular computer use is required; systems include Microsoft Office, Office 365, ESRI GIS, NPS database, APD, NetSuite, RIMS, and Google applications
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable personal vehicle required
