The Aerospace Corporation is an independent nonprofit organization that operates a federally funded research and development center dedicated to the space enterprise. Its teams provide objective technical analysis, engineering support, and strategic assessments for government, civil, and commercial customers. Work at The Aerospace Corporation spans space cybersecurity, satellite-system resilience, space safety, environmental satellite programs supported by agencies such as NOAA and NASA, orbital debris mitigation, and technologies that advance national space capabilities. The organization brings together expertise across aerospace, defense, consulting, and related technical fields, supporting employees working on complex challenges shaping the future of space.

Rendezvous and Proximity Operations Engineer – Computer Vision and Relative Navigation

Advance spacecraft rendezvous systems through computer vision and relative-navigation engineering at The Aerospace Corporation. Develop algorithms, flight-dynamics tools, and AI/ML analyses for national space customers.

Description

  • Develop and integrate computer-vision and relative-navigation algorithms for mission-level rendezvous and proximity-operations modeling.
  • Assess contested-space mission applications, identify system vulnerabilities, and help develop concepts of operations.
  • Investigate tactics, techniques, and procedures while incorporating complex operational constraints into space-system design and maturation.
  • Create flight-dynamics tools and maintain a modern internal software base for customer deliverables.
  • Apply AI, machine learning, and reinforcement-learning methods with flight-mechanics models to evaluate complex analysis and decision-making tradeoffs.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to convert customer mission requirements into technical solutions and analysis products.
  • Support customer flight-mechanics needs with expertise in state and pose estimation, image processing, and automation.
  • Travel occasionally to support customer engagements.

Requirements

  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, or a related discipline, either in progress or completed within the past 12 months.
  • Zero to one year of professional technical experience.
  • Background in computer vision, relative navigation, or both.
  • Experience in at least one relevant area, such as space mission analysis and design, state or pose estimation, orbit determination, image processing, algorithm development, software engineering, astrodynamics, or spacecraft rendezvous-and-proximity-operations simulation and optimization.
  • Proficiency in at least one of C, C++, Python, Fortran, or MATLAB.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Willingness to travel domestically to customer and contractor facilities approximately 10% of the time.
  • Ability to obtain and retain a U.S. government security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
  • Official transcripts are required.
  • A PhD is considered an impressive qualification but is not required.
  • Experience developing or using analysis software that combines numerical methods, orbital or flight mechanics, and optimization techniques; advanced algorithm-development skills involving parallel processing and scripting are also valued. An active SSBI with TS/SCI and/or TS/SAP clearance is identified as a standout qualification.
