Remote Software and Firmware Engineering Expert

Evaluate embedded software, firmware, FPGA, flight, and hardware-testing systems as an experienced engineering specialist. Help Mercor’s AI research partners assess real-world engineering solutions and improve AI reasoning about hardware-connected systems.

Description

  • Apply practical software, firmware, and digital hardware expertise to complex work involving physical systems
  • Evaluate embedded firmware, FPGA and RTL designs, flight software, test automation frameworks, hardware interfaces, and system-level workflows
  • Analyze trade-offs across real-time performance, timing, memory, compute capacity, interfaces, reliability, fault handling, concurrency, and hardware-software integration
  • Judge the correctness, robustness, and practical viability of solutions for embedded and hardware-connected products
  • Detect implementation defects, flawed assumptions, race conditions, timing problems, interface failures, resource limitations, and other system-level risks
  • Create or assess engineering challenges, reference implementations, test cases, evaluation standards, and technical documentation
  • Use experience in development, integration, hardware bring-up, debugging, verification, validation, test automation, and deployment
  • Deliver technical feedback informed by production constraints and hands-on engineering practice
  • Contribute to an advanced engineering and AI research program with a leading technology organization
  • Help improve AI capabilities in embedded development, hardware-software integration, digital design, real-time systems, testing, and debugging

Requirements

  • Bring at least five years of professional experience in software, firmware, FPGA, or embedded systems engineering
  • Have at least three years of recent, hands-on experience developing, integrating, testing, bringing up, or troubleshooting software or firmware on physical hardware
  • Have served as the accountable engineer for production software or firmware connected to hardware
  • Have owned development stages from requirements and architecture through implementation, integration, hardware bring-up, verification, validation, debugging, and deployment
  • Demonstrate deep expertise in at least one core area: embedded firmware and real-time systems, FPGA and RTL design and verification, flight software and safety- or mission-critical systems, or hardware test automation and hardware-in-the-loop infrastructure
  • Use relevant technologies such as C or C++, Python, RTOS or bare-metal development, device drivers, bootloaders, embedded Linux, SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, Verilog, SystemVerilog, VHDL, FPGA toolchains, hardware interfaces, telemetry, and automated testing
  • Have debugged software-hardware interactions and physical systems with tools such as JTAG or SWD debuggers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, hardware simulators or emulators, HIL or SIL environments, automated test equipment, CI systems, and structured root-cause analysis
  • Have developed systems in real-world product or hardware manufacturing settings
  • Explain architectural choices, implementation trade-offs, test outcomes, and failure mechanisms clearly
  • Experience with an organization that designs, builds, tests, and manufactures physical hardware or embedded systems is strongly preferred
  • Work as an independent contractor
  • H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are not supported
