Materials Science Safety Engineer II

Sierra Nevada Corporation is hiring a Materials Science Safety Engineer II to assess hazardous materials and material risks for aerospace and defense systems. The role supports the SAOC aircraft modernization mission through regulatory compliance, material evaluation, and engineering guidance.

Description

  • Assess materials for aerospace and defense applications
  • Perform detailed material risk assessments
  • Develop and maintain hazardous materials databases
  • Partner with design engineers to improve material selection
  • Advise on hazardous material properties and performance
  • Use structured, analytical methods to select materials and processes
  • Communicate technical information, design specifications, and project updates to colleagues, stakeholders, and management
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams
  • Contribute to the SAOC mission to modernize and deliver next-generation aircraft for the U.S. Air Force

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science, chemical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related discipline
  • At least two years of experience in materials science or a related position
  • A more advanced relevant degree may replace the experience requirement
  • Strong foundational knowledge of material properties
  • General knowledge of local, state, or federal hazardous materials regulations
  • Experience contributing to multidisciplinary design and development teams
  • Eligible to obtain and retain a Secret U.S. security clearance
  • U.S. citizenship is required
  • A master’s degree in a related discipline is preferred
  • Experience using spectroscopy, mechanical and thermal testing equipment, and related software is preferred
  • Familiarity with FAA, NASA, or DoD materials and process guidance and regulations
  • Knowledge of MMPDS, CHM-17, AGATE, NCAMP, and MAPTIS materials allowable databases
  • Knowledge of environmental requirements for aircraft and space materials
  • Experience providing technical direction in materials and process engineering
  • Experience in the aerospace and defense sector, the U.S. Department of Defense, or the U.S. military
  • Experience developing qualitative or quantitative system safety analyses
  • Experience applying MIL-STD-882
  • Experience authoring and implementing policies
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods
  • Willingness to travel occasionally
  • Ability to work in an office or hybrid setting
  • Ability to interpret technical documents, designs, and test reports
