Proper Voltage is a B2B technology company working at the intersection of energy, manufacturing, and software. Its Battery Operating System (bOS) connects advanced battery chemistries with the power systems used in commercial and industrial products, giving manufacturers and battery makers a software layer for managing performance, safety, and deployment. By helping teams integrate different battery technologies without redesigning hardware or repeating certification work, Proper Voltage aims to simplify the path from battery innovation to practical product use. Its platform also supports software-driven power management and monitoring across the product lifecycle.

Lead Firmware Engineer, Power Conversion Control (California Remote)

Lead real-time firmware development for bidirectional DC/DC converter controls in Proper Voltage’s intelligent battery systems. Advance safety-critical power hardware from simulation through certified laboratory validation.

Description

  • Lead real-time firmware for bidirectional DC/DC power-conversion stages
  • Develop control loops for four-switch buck-boost converters, multiphase interleaving, and phase-current balancing
  • Build compensators, mode arbitration, scheduler and ISR architecture, and platform abstractions for a portable DC/DC control library
  • Implement converter protections for cycle-by-cycle current limiting, overvoltage, undervoltage, thermal derating, gate-drive faults, and safe-state transitions
  • Validate firmware against control models through closed-loop simulation and tolerance-based response comparisons
  • Design and maintain deterministic fast-control and supervisory tasks, including jitter measurement and worst-case execution-time documentation
  • Configure and validate PWM, ADC, comparator, DAC, triggering, sampling, dead-time, and protection systems
  • Measure sampling, computation, and PWM-update latency on target hardware and report results to the controls engineer
  • Implement constant-current, constant-voltage, constant-power, current-limit, soft-start, buck-to-boost, phase-shedding, and charge-discharge reversal modes
  • Bring up converter hardware in the laboratory through full-envelope characterization, including gate-drive debugging, dead-time tuning, and shoot-through prevention
  • Support loop-gain, transient-response, and efficiency testing while resolving model-to-hardware discrepancies
  • Create on-target unit tests and hardware-in-the-loop regression systems
  • Write firmware specifications and certification verification evidence for UL 1973, UL 1998, and UL 9540
  • Act as technical lead, review controls and embedded code, and participate in hardware design reviews

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent demonstrated expertise
  • At least six years of experience developing production embedded C firmware for resource-constrained real-time systems
  • Professional experience developing control firmware for switched-mode power converters, inverters, or motor drives
  • Working knowledge of PID and 2p2z/3p3z difference equations, discretization, sampling and computational delay, saturation, and anti-windup
  • Proficiency with high-resolution PWM, PWM-triggered ADCs, analog comparators, DACs, and DMA
  • Competence with fixed-point arithmetic, including Q-format scaling, range and overflow analysis, and saturation behavior
  • Experience designing deterministic ISRs under hard timing constraints and measuring and defending worst-case execution time
  • Ability to independently conduct laboratory work with oscilloscopes, isolated and differential probes, current probes, electronic loads, and bidirectional power supplies
  • Experience with version control, code reviews, specifications, and test evidence
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is unavailable
  • Preferred experience with dsPIC, dsPIC33C/33CK/33CH, MPLAB X, XC16, and the Microchip digital power ecosystem
  • Preferred experience with bidirectional and multiphase interleaved converter control, average current-mode control, GaN/SiC, ARM Cortex-M, PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink, network-analyzer measurements, battery energy storage, EV charging, PV and grid-interactive converters, functional safety and certification, MISRA C, static analysis, CAN/CANopen, and portable control libraries

Benefits

  • Equity options are included in the compensation package
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Generous paid time off
  • Paid holidays under the PTO policy
