Full-Stack API Developer (Maryland Remote)

Build accessible web features, REST APIs, and hydrologic data services for the modernization of the National Water Prediction Service. Work with Agile engineering teams on full-stack development and data-driven applications.

Description

  • Develop, test, and deliver full-stack features, web pages, and REST API endpoints supporting NWPS modernization.
  • Create responsive, accessible interface components such as hydrographs, data tables, map widgets, and location-search views.
  • Use Python scripts and SQL queries to parse, transform, and store hydrologic data from multiple sources in Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and S3.
  • Create automated unit and integration tests with Pytest, Jest, or unittest.
  • Use VLab GitLab and GitHub for feature branches, pull and merge requests, automated pipelines, and peer reviews.
  • Contribute to daily Scrum meetings, sprint planning, story estimation, and issue tracking in Jira or VLab Redmine.
  • Support senior engineers with automated sandbox testing and schema validation for community-developed code contributions.
  • Partner with Senior Developers, GIS Specialists, and government hydrologists to deliver National Water Prediction Service features.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
  • Three to five years of professional experience developing full-stack web applications and APIs.
  • Practical experience building full-stack applications, creating and consuming REST APIs, and querying relational or spatial databases.
  • Working knowledge of Git branching and pull-request workflows, along with automated unit testing.
  • Proficiency with Python using FastAPI, Flask, or Django; JavaScript or TypeScript; and HTML5/CSS3.
  • Knowledge of REST API design, PostgreSQL or SQL, JSON/GeoJSON parsing, and relational schema design.
  • Ability to develop accessible web components that meet Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA requirements.
  • Familiarity with AWS environments, including Fargate, S3, and Aurora; Docker containers; and basic Infrastructure as Code concepts.
  • Experience with Pytest, Jest, VLab GitLab or GitHub repositories, and Jira or Redmine.
