Description

  • Lead engineering design and assurance throughout the project lifecycle through handover
  • Own all engineering and design activities across the framework
  • Manage design managers, engineers, design houses, technical leads and quality assurance staff
  • Oversee design compliance and change, temporary works, BIM, materials management, quality assurance and handover
  • Ensure designs are delivered on schedule, right first time, construction-ready and suitable for asset-owner adoption
  • Develop and implement the Framework Design Strategy
  • Establish integrated framework design controls, processes and procedures aligned with GAL and The Costain Way
  • Provide technical leadership and quality control for safe, timely, cost-effective and high-quality delivery
  • Manage external consultants, internal design teams, subcontractor-designed elements and their integration
  • Work with clients and external stakeholders, including National Highways, to support successful handover
  • Support the development, writing, review and management of tender solutions for future works
  • Support technical strategy and pipeline development with preconstruction and project directors
  • Work with project leadership to enable safe and efficient design, delivery and handover
  • Evaluate team capability and secure appropriate skills and resources
  • Lead safe-by-design practices and fulfill legal duties under CDM and applicable legislation
  • Ensure work complies with design information, planning constraints, technical specifications and Costain Way guidance
  • Coordinate technical, design and quality managers as one integrated team
  • Embed a Right First-Time quality culture
  • Manage interfaces and information flow between design and construction teams
  • Provide planning and procurement support
  • Develop strategic design partnerships across the supply chain

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of construction delivery experience, including 3 or more years in management, such as a Senior Design Manager
  • Knowledge of and experience with relevant design solutions and standards, including GAL standards, ICAO/CAP, and the Specification for Highways Works, alongside common construction methods and procedures
  • Experience working in Principal Designer and Principal Contractor environments
  • Knowledge of and experience with temporary works procedures
  • Experience establishing framework processes and controls
  • A degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
  • A relevant CSCS Card
  • Chartered Engineer status and membership of a professional engineering institution
  • Aviation and highways experience, particularly with GAL and National Highways, is preferred
