Embedded Linux Engineer

Modernize CACI’s mission-critical retransmission devices, from current firmware to a next-generation platform. Work across OpenWrt, Alma Linux, networking, APIs, CI/CD, and embedded security.

Description

  • Support the current IRD retransmission device and its next-generation replacement.
  • Complete development, integration, sustainment, and defect-resolution work.
  • Help shape technical direction, platform architecture, hardware integration, cybersecurity, and release plans.
  • Develop and modernize a mission-critical embedded retransmission device.
  • Work across the embedded software lifecycle, from Linux images and platform integration to networking services, device configuration, web administration, testing, and releases.
  • Coordinate with software, hardware, cybersecurity, test, systems engineering, and product teams.
  • Migrate the existing OpenWrt-based device solution to next-generation hardware and an Alma Linux architecture.
  • Design, integrate, test, debug, and maintain Linux software for embedded networking and retransmission devices.
  • Maintain and improve the current OpenWrt-based IRD firmware, including image configuration, custom package feeds, services, first-boot behavior, device configuration, and build integration.
  • Develop and maintain software using Python, Bash or shell scripting, C or C++, and other languages as needed.
  • Complete development tickets to migrate IRD capabilities to next-generation ARM hardware.
  • Support bootloader, kernel, board-support, cross-compilation, device configuration, and embedded Linux image development.
  • Build and maintain Linux and Buildroot workflows for image creation, packaging, provisioning, releases, updates, and deployment.
  • Help evolve a Linux- or RHEL-based management architecture.
  • Develop and maintain REST APIs and device-management interfaces.
  • Implement, maintain, and troubleshoot networking features, including interface configuration, routing, DNS, Wi-Fi, cellular or modem integration, and secure communications.
  • Create and maintain unit, integration, system, simulation, and hardware-connected tests.
  • Review GitLab merge requests and support CI/CD pipelines, build validation, release engineering, and reproducible builds.
  • Support secure development through vulnerability remediation, certificate handling, authentication and authorization, update integrity, dependency management, and CVE analysis.
  • Maintain design, build, API, test, and operational documentation.
  • Work with hardware, systems, cybersecurity, quality assurance, and product teams to implement and validate requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least five years of relevant professional software development experience.
  • At least five years developing, integrating, testing, or sustaining software for Linux-based systems.
  • Experience programming in Python, Bash or shell scripting, and C or C++.
  • Experience with Linux configuration, debugging, networking, package management, and software deployment.
  • Experience developing, integrating, and debugging software on ARM and/or Intel or x86 devices.
  • Experience with embedded Linux build systems or distributions such as OpenWrt, Buildroot, Yocto, or equivalent.
  • Experience with cross-compilation, embedded Linux image creation, software packaging, and deployment to embedded devices.
  • Experience with Linux networking, including interface configuration, routing, DNS, DHCP, firewalls, Wi-Fi, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience developing and debugging REST APIs, device-management applications, or web-based configuration interfaces.
  • Experience using Git and GitLab workflows, including merge requests, code reviews, and branching strategies.
  • At least two years building, maintaining, or troubleshooting automated CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience creating unit, integration, system, or hardware-in-the-loop tests for software running on Linux systems or embedded devices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create and maintain technical documentation.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote, cross-functional development environment.
  • Preferred: experience with NXP i.MX8, ARM64 or AArch64, U-Boot, Linux kernel configuration, device trees, boot flows, or board-support packages.
  • Preferred: experience porting embedded Linux software to a new hardware platform or Linux distribution.
  • Preferred: experience with OpenWrt buildroots, feeds, package Makefiles, or custom OpenWrt package development.
  • Preferred: experience with Alma Linux, RHEL, RPM or DNF, Kickstart, OSTree, SELinux, or RHEL Cockpit.
  • Preferred: experience developing Python or Flask applications, OpenAPI or Swagger-documented APIs, or embedded device-management interfaces.
  • Preferred: experience with embedded networking products, retransmission devices, routers, cellular or modem integration, Wi-Fi, 802.1X, routing, or secure network configuration.
  • Preferred: experience with device provisioning, firmware or image installation, update mechanisms, or field-device sustainment.
  • Preferred: experience with secure software development, certificate or PKI integration, vulnerability scanning, SBOMs, CVE remediation, or tools such as Trivy.
  • Preferred: experience with containerized builds, simulated device environments, or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Preferred: experience supporting DoD, mission, tactical-edge, disconnected, or regulated embedded-device environments.
