Director of Lawyers Professional Responsibility and Client Security Board

Lead Minnesota attorney-discipline operations and Client Security Board activities for the Minnesota Supreme Court. Oversee staff, investigations, litigation, budgets, reporting, and statewide professional-responsibility outreach.

Description

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility
  • Supervise 23 OLPR employees, including 12 attorneys
  • Review misconduct complaints involving Minnesota attorneys
  • Investigate and litigate contested discipline matters before appointed referees and the Minnesota Supreme Court
  • Provide legal guidance and educational programs on professional responsibility
  • Coordinate with the Supreme Court’s professional regulatory agencies
  • Set investigative priorities, manage the case inventory, and support timely resolutions
  • Develop staff while promoting consistent decisions and public confidence
  • Oversee Client Security Board work by screening compensation claims, coordinating investigations, and presenting matters to the Board
  • Prepare and administer budgets for both Boards
  • Collaborate with volunteer district ethics committees
  • Prepare and submit annual and other requested reports
  • Lead statewide outreach and speaking engagements
  • Write 8–10 annual columns for the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Bench & Bar journal
  • Serve at the pleasure of the Minnesota Supreme Court, with performance evaluated by the State Court Administrator and Board input

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Current license to practice law in Minnesota
  • Substantial experience practicing law in private or public-sector settings
  • At least three years of trial and civil litigation experience
  • Some experience with appellate matters
  • Experience in administration and supervision
  • Experience handling attorney-discipline cases
  • Exceptional writing, public speaking, presentation, and interpersonal abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of professional-conduct and professional-responsibility rules governing the legal profession
  • Extensive knowledge of related case law and Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board opinions
  • Extensive knowledge of substantive and procedural law, Supreme Court rules, and case law
  • Extensive knowledge of trial and appellate procedures and rules of evidence
  • Strong knowledge of contemporary management and supervisory principles and practices
  • Ability to plan, assign, and direct legal and support supervisory work
  • Ability to prepare and administer operating budgets
  • Ability to advise the Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board and Client Security Board
  • Ability to build and sustain effective relationships with legal, governmental, civic, organizational, employee, and public stakeholders
  • Employment offers are contingent on a BCA criminal background check and attorney records check
  • More than 10 years of overall experience preferred
  • Active involvement in state or county bar associations highly desirable
  • Experience providing professional education or leading public-facing legal-community initiatives preferred
