Director Actuary, Homeowners Pricing – The Hartford

Lead Homeowners rate adequacy, pricing strategy, actuarial modeling, and data science initiatives for The Hartford. The role uses R, SQL, Shiny, and advanced analytics to guide state-specific decisions.

Description

  • Lead a team responsible for producing and analyzing Homeowners rate adequacy, maintaining clear visibility into key assumptions
  • Work with partners to develop rate adequacy assumptions and incorporate current information from across the organization
  • Modernize actuarial processes and established methodologies with innovative data science techniques
  • Collaborate with the modeling team to prioritize initiatives, investigate findings, and communicate results to business partners
  • Create tools and analytics with statistical technologies, including R and Shiny applications, using the Homeowners data asset
  • Apply advanced analytics and modeling to uncover meaningful risk relationships and produce actionable insights
  • Present findings to leaders across Actuarial, Reserving, Claims, and Product
  • Collaborate with Personal Insurance planning, reserving, ASM, Product, enterprise Claims Analytics, and Business Insurance Property Actuarial teams
  • Direct state-specific Homeowners pricing strategies and decisions through rate adequacy analysis
  • Support stakeholders and customers in deploying and adopting analytical tools

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, actuarial science, or a related field
  • FCAS preferred; candidates with an appropriate knowledge background may be considered
  • At least five years of property and casualty insurance actuarial experience
  • Homeowners experience is helpful but not required
  • Knowledge of actuarial pricing techniques
  • Demonstrated technical and analytical abilities
  • High proficiency in Excel
  • Experience with R and SQL preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated and proactive in identifying opportunities to add value
  • Ability to collaborate with and influence people at different organizational levels
  • Results-oriented approach with a commitment to deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Candidates near the Hartford, Chicago, or Charlotte offices are expected to work onsite three days per week, Tuesday through Thursday
  • Candidates who are not near an office may be considered for remote work with occasional travel
