Controls Engineer – Houston, TX (Hybrid)

Design and commission PLC, HMI, and facility control systems for Giga Energy’s AI data center infrastructure. Support controls integration, testing, commissioning, and field troubleshooting across mission-critical facilities.

Description

  • Lead the design, development, and commissioning of control systems for mission-critical AI infrastructure.
  • Develop PLC and HMI programs for building automation and facility control systems.
  • Design control panels and create detailed schematics from concept through construction-ready documentation.
  • Develop and maintain network designs using Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, and Modbus RTU.
  • Configure and commission VFD controls for motors, pumps, and HVAC equipment.
  • Interpret P&ID diagrams and translate process requirements into control logic, including valve sequencing, motor control, and pump staging.
  • Partner with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to integrate controls into facility infrastructure.
  • Support factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Improve and scale existing controls and building management system designs as needed.
  • Troubleshoot field control-system issues and lead resolutions with minimal supervision.
  • Keep as-built documentation, program backups, and engineering records accurate and current.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of hands-on PLC and HMI programming and commissioning experience; Rockwell Automation Suite experience is preferred.
  • Experience designing control panels and producing control schematics in AutoCAD.
  • Strong understanding of control-system fundamentals, including loop and PID control; building automation experience with cooling systems is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of VFD configuration and control; Allen-Bradley and ABB drive experience is a plus.
  • Ability to read and apply P&ID diagrams covering valve functions, motor control, and pump control logic.
  • Familiarity with I/O design and at least one industrial communications protocol: Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, or Modbus RTU.
  • Ability to learn new platforms, tools, and systems quickly and work independently with limited guidance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Experience with data center cooling controls or other mission-critical facility environments is a bonus.
  • Knowledge of network architecture and industrial cybersecurity practices for OT/ICS environments is a bonus.
  • Experience with additional protocols such as BACnet, Profibus, PROFINET, or OPC-UA is a bonus.
  • Familiarity with SCADA and historian platforms; Ignition experience is preferred.
  • Experience working in fast-paced build environments is a bonus.
