AI Software Developer (All Levels) – Hybrid, Gaithersburg

Develop microservices, APIs, and cloud-native automation for Leidos’ mission-critical air traffic systems. Apply AI-assisted engineering practices across safety-critical government programs.

Description

  • Build and maintain microservices that support the L-CAP automation platform.
  • Work with architects to turn system designs into scalable, reliable implementations.
  • Develop RESTful APIs and event-driven integrations within a hybrid-cloud data mesh.
  • Integrate relational and NoSQL databases while maintaining data consistency and performance.
  • Tune and optimize distributed services for improved performance.
  • Lead and participate in code reviews while upholding engineering standards and best practices.
  • Mentor junior developers and offer technical guidance.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex problems across services, APIs, and infrastructure.
  • Create and maintain design documents, API specifications, and operational runbooks.
  • Take part in SAFe and Agile ceremonies, PI planning, and backlog refinement.
  • Profile distributed air traffic control services and analyze optimization and latency opportunities.
  • Preserve interface stability and backward compatibility throughout modernization efforts.
  • Transform legacy air traffic control automation functions into cloud-native services.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools, automation, and contemporary software engineering practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience in place of a degree.
  • At least 2 years of experience for the Junior level.
  • At least 4 years of experience for the Mid level.
  • At least 8 years of experience for the Senior level.
  • Proficiency in Java or C++ with demonstrated production software development experience.
  • Background designing and developing microservices-based applications.
  • Strong knowledge of RESTful API design and implementation.
  • Experience working with distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
  • Proficiency with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
  • Experience using relational databases such as PostgreSQL and Oracle, plus NoSQL databases such as MongoDB and Cassandra.
  • Solid Git experience and familiarity with collaborative development workflows.
  • Familiarity with Agile and SAFe frameworks and iterative delivery practices.
  • Strong debugging, problem-solving, and analytical abilities.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust.
  • Experience with performance engineering, including profiling, benchmarking, and distributed-service optimization.
  • Knowledge of interface stability and API versioning practices for service-oriented architectures.
  • Experience converting legacy software into service-oriented or microservice implementations.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Successful completion of background investigations required by the government customer.
  • Proficiency in Python programming.
  • Experience with Docker containerization and Kubernetes orchestration.
  • Experience with AWS or Azure cloud platforms, including managed services.
  • Experience with Kafka or RabbitMQ message brokers and streaming architectures.
  • Knowledge of domain-driven design and data mesh patterns.
  • Experience in aviation, defense, or other safety-critical software environments.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools.
  • Experience with performance-critical distributed systems in operational or real-time environments.
