Create playful visual styles and illustrative 2D assets for Chess.com, a global platform for playing and learning chess. Partner with product, animation, motion design, and engineering teams to shape engaging interactive experiences.

Description

  • Support the development of Chess.com’s creative direction and visual identity
  • Advance the art style through playful, engaging, and challenging design concepts
  • Contribute artwork to product and brand initiatives
  • Produce illustrations that translate the creative vision into finished assets
  • Work closely with product, animation, motion design, and engineering teams
  • Create environments, objects, storyboards, characters, clothing, and other 2D artwork

Requirements

  • Expert-level ability to create vector artwork with tools such as Adobe Illustrator and Figma
  • Strong 2D art and illustration capabilities
  • Refined understanding of composition, perspective, color theory, and visual focus
  • Experience creating environments, objects, storyboards, characters, and clothing
  • Imaginative and inventive approach to developing creative worlds for interactive products
  • Ability to adapt to established visual styles and work across varied illustration and vector-art approaches
  • At least three years of experience in a gaming environment
  • Capacity to quickly learn new technical skills and concepts
  • Effective time management with a track record of meeting deadlines in fast-paced settings
  • Ability to collaborate across small team pods and larger product teams
  • Able to independently manage pipeline deliverables with some support
  • Adaptable and versatile in a rapidly changing environment
  • Portfolio that demonstrates the capabilities required for the role
  • Enthusiasm for games and for sharing chess with others
  • Working knowledge of animation pipelines for 2D game-animation assets
  • Experience using motion design tools such as Lottie, Rive, or CSS
