Director of Underwriting Strategy and Governance

- Coach underwriters to build stronger technical expertise, judgment, and consistency
- Create, improve, and deliver underwriting education programs
- Uphold underwriting standards, documentation requirements, and governance practices
- Help the Associate (VP) Chief Underwriter carry out strategy, governance standards, and policy updates
- Contribute to governance forums, quality assessments, audits, and related initiatives
- Analyze cases and results to uncover trends and opportunities for improvement
- Address complex underwriting and systemic issues, escalating findings and recommendations
- Contribute to projects focused on process improvement, technology adoption, and vendor implementations
- Help underwriters transition to new tools, automation, and improved workflows
- Work with Medical, Actuarial, Product, Reinsurance, Distribution, Compliance, and Operations teams
- Promote responsible AI and advanced analytics through training, documentation, and quality safeguards
- Act as a senior underwriting specialist and escalation resource for complex risk evaluations
- Assess referrals and issue underwriting decisions and signatures within delegated authority, including large, complex, and jumbo cases
- Provide limited production underwriting assistance without managing daily case flow or operational queues

- A bachelor’s degree or comparable relevant work experience
- At least 10 years of experience in life underwriting
- Underwriting signing authority of $20 million, including complex case design and advanced sales experience
- Extensive technical knowledge of life underwriting risk evaluation, complex cases, and underwriting standards
- Proven ability to mentor, coach, and develop underwriters’ technical decision-making and consistency
- Background supporting underwriting education, quality assessments, and governance programs
- Knowledge of Term, Whole Life, IUL, and VUL products, including advanced underwriting considerations
- Familiarity with underwriting tools, evidence sources, and emerging technologies such as AI-enabled capabilities
- Ability to collaborate with senior underwriting leaders without direct responsibility for operations
- Sound judgment with strong communication and influencing abilities
- ACS, ALU, FLMI, FALU, or CLU designation, or progress toward one or more of these credentials, preferred
- A master’s degree or MBA, preferred
