Senior Failure Analysis Engineer, Medium Voltage Equipment

Investigate failures in medium-voltage transformers, switchgear, and converters for SMA America, a solar inverter manufacturer. Establish evidence-based root causes and guide corrective actions with global teams.

Tavsif

  • Lead field investigations of medium-voltage equipment through site inspections, electrical testing, teardown, and evidence gathering.
  • Analyze technical failures and data to identify failure mechanisms and root causes.
  • Use the 8D method to conduct structured root cause investigations.
  • Document evidence-based analyses in line with applicable standards, global processes, and stakeholder needs.
  • Carry out initial site analyses and technical evaluations, and provide consultation on site.
  • Prepare detailed failure reports and work with headquarters to advise and support other teams.
  • Identify and record recurring failure patterns, applying technical expertise to help resolve them.
  • Partner with international, cross-functional teams to put lasting corrective and preventive measures in place.
  • Track and assess corrective measures taken by service teams and suppliers, and verify their effectiveness.
  • Work with Customer Quality, Supplier Quality, and regional teams.
  • Coordinate closely with SMA’s headquarters analysis unit and U.S. application engineering team.
  • Travel about 20–30% to customer locations, the Rocklin, California office, and trade shows as needed.
  • Take on other duties as assigned.

Talablar

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent education; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • At least seven years of experience in research and development, technical failure analysis, and quality engineering, including customer relations.
  • Required hands-on field investigation experience with medium-voltage equipment such as transformers, switchgear, or converters.
  • Ability to determine failure mechanisms and root causes from site evidence, electrical test results, and physical damage analysis.
  • Expertise in the 8D method, 5 Whys, Ishikawa diagrams, and Pareto analysis.
  • Experience in solar, utilities, power generation, or another industry that uses medium-voltage equipment.
  • Ability to present quality findings and corrective measures to senior leaders.
  • Ability to travel about 20–30%, including to customer sites and the Rocklin, California office.
  • Availability for occasional early-morning meetings with headquarters in Germany.
  • Fluent written and spoken English is required; German is an advantage.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel is required.
  • Experience conducting or interpreting medium-voltage electrical tests, including insulation resistance, power factor, turns ratio, and dissolved gas analysis.
  • Experience with hermetically sealed equipment.
  • Working knowledge of SAP, Salesforce, and JIRA.
