Senior Backend Engineer, Databases
Lead backend engineering for Tempo, Grafana Labs’ open-source distributed tracing system, across its database components. Improve scalable APIs, performance, reliability, and operations for Grafana’s observability products.
Tavsif
- Set technical direction for complex Tempo roadmap challenges.
- Lead multi-month engineering initiatives from problem definition through rollout.
- Work with Staff engineers and the tech lead to shape direction across teams.
- Own components spanning ingestion, storage, querying, and metrics generation.
- Prepare and present design documents, and take part in design reviews.
- Balance performance, cost, and complexity when making technical decisions.
- Build structured, predictable, discoverable APIs for people, agents, products, and integrators.
- Deliver against SLOs including P99 write latency, recurring incidents, and cost per ingested GB.
- Reduce operational effort with configurable rollouts and actionable alerts.
- Coordinate with Product and related teams, including App Observability, Asserts, Drilldown, and Grafana Assistant.
- Support engineer growth through code reviews, design feedback, and pairing.
- Take part in on-call rotations, incident response, and post-incident reviews.
- Contribute to Tempo and the open-source community, including reviewing external contributions.
- Advance trace aggregation, autoscaling, ingestion and query performance, multi-cell operations, and customer-facing limits.
Talablar
- Demonstrated success delivering complex, multi-month projects from design through delivery and operations.
- Substantial hands-on experience building and operating production distributed data systems.
- Experience with ingestion pipelines, storage engines, query execution, or comparable systems.
- Strong software craftsmanship, with a focus on clean, reliable, efficient, maintainable code.
- Strong Go skills, or experience in Rust, C, or C++ with a path to Go.
- Experience owning production services and participating in pager rotations.
- Experience reducing operational toil and treating SLOs as a product capability.
- Customer-focused approach and pragmatic, iterative delivery.
- Clear written and verbal communication in a fully remote, asynchronous setting.
- Must be based in the United States or Canada.
