Web Engineering Manager, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Remote, Tennessee)

Lead full-stack web engineering for Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s applications and WordPress ecosystem. Manage development, integrations, modernization, team mentorship, and AI-enabled engineering initiatives.

Apraksts

  • Architect and build web applications and custom software that advance university objectives
  • Lead front-end, back-end, and systems integration work
  • Modernize the university’s WordPress platform
  • Create custom WordPress solutions, including page-builder modules, theme templates, and third-party integrations
  • Design and optimize database schemas, queries, and data-processing workflows
  • Connect external libraries, APIs, AI platforms, and third-party services
  • Maintain and improve legacy PHP/MySQL applications and WordPress codebases while planning migrations
  • Diagnose application defects, security vulnerabilities, and performance problems
  • Drive adoption of AI-assisted development practices, coding tools, workflow automation, and emerging technologies
  • Build intelligent search capabilities, chat interfaces, and automated workflows
  • Manage a small team by assigning work, setting priorities, providing feedback, and supporting career development
  • Mentor engineers and conduct code reviews
  • Manage relationships with external development vendors
  • Support hiring and onboarding activities
  • Act as the technical liaison to central IT and lead website migrations
  • Partner with UX/UI designers, product stakeholders, and cross-functional teams
  • Deliver advanced technical support and consultation for complex web application issues as the escalation point
  • Document system architecture, technical specifications, and operational procedures
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives, special projects, and departmental planning

Prasības

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience, is required
  • At least five years of professional full-stack web development experience
  • Substantial back-end development experience with PHP and MySQL
  • Front-end development experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and relevant frameworks or libraries
  • Advanced WordPress development experience, including custom themes, plugins, and the WordPress REST API
  • Proficiency in modern JavaScript and at least one framework, such as React
  • Experience consuming APIs from decoupled front ends
  • Experience incorporating third-party APIs and services into web applications
  • Working knowledge of web application security, performance optimization, and accessibility standards
  • A track record of leading or mentoring developers
  • Ability to independently manage multiple deadline-driven projects and competing priorities
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience delivering headless or decoupled WordPress architectures and related tools
  • Practical experience with AI development tools, schema, JSON-LD, and AI-powered application features
  • Experience in a shared-services environment with infrastructure managed by a central IT organization
  • Experience in higher education or another complex organization with multiple stakeholders
