Senior Accountant, Financial Reporting (Birmingham Hybrid)
Senior accountant responsible for financial reporting across insurance and annuity products at Protective Life. The role covers earnings analysis, reporting controls, audits, and process improvement.

- Analyze quarterly earnings for annuity products, explaining significant trends, variances, and financial drivers
- Prepare and review Retirement segment reporting packages, earnings analyses, disclosures, and close deliverables
- Present quarterly financial results and conduct follow-up analysis in response to management questions
- Prepare and review GAAP and statutory income statement and balance sheet variance analyses
- Act as the lead accounting and financial reporting contact for assigned product transactions and reporting duties
- Research complex accounting matters, new transactions, reinsurance arrangements, and developing reporting requirements
- Coordinate reporting work and key deadlines among multiple stakeholders
- Support reporting and analysis for assigned legal entities and subsidiaries, including reinsurance activity
- Collaborate with actuarial, FP&A, accounting, investment accounting, reinsurance accounting, technology, and operations teams
- Execute and document internal controls while responding to internal and external audit requests
- Assess reporting risks and identify opportunities to strengthen controls and improve processes
- Lead or support automation, reporting enhancements, and implementation of new accounting or business requirements
- Provide technical guidance, work direction, and quality reviews for colleagues involved in reporting activities

- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related discipline
- At least four years of progressive experience in accounting, financial reporting, auditing, or a comparable field
- Experience analyzing financial results and investigating variances
- Working knowledge of financial reporting, internal controls, reconciliations, and month-end or quarter-end close processes
- Experience handling complex financial data and producing accurate, timely work
- Ability to lead projects, workstreams, or key deliverables with limited supervision
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate across functions and organizational levels
- Strong financial analysis and problem-solving skills
- Ability to interpret complex financial information and explain conclusions to diverse audiences
- Solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, reconciliations, and close activities
- Strong organization and prioritization skills for managing competing deadlines
- Ability to apply professional judgment and resolve complex issues independently
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel
- CPA designation preferred
- Public accounting, assurance, or audit experience preferred
- Insurance, annuity, life insurance, or reinsurance accounting and reporting experience preferred
- Knowledge of GAAP and statutory reporting requirements preferred
- Experience with SAP S/4HANA, Analysis for Office, or comparable enterprise reporting tools preferred
