Technical Risk Analyst, Construction — Tarion, Toronto Hybrid

Assess residential construction and builder performance for Tarion’s Ontario home warranty program. Review sites, claims, interviews, and underwriting risks.

Description

  • Assess risk using vendor and builder performance history
  • Meet builders on-site to review construction practices and identify potential future claims risks
  • Recommend risk mitigation measures and improved building practices
  • Educate builders on relevant practices and requirements
  • Review files for claim causes, outstanding reserves, and trends, then communicate recommendations to underwriters
  • Coordinate with warranty services
  • Assess builder risk through interviews with new and existing builders
  • Give underwriters timely guidance to support progress on builder files
  • Make recommendations based on vendor performance reviews and interview findings
  • Review underwriting concerns related to builder conduct and support their analysis
  • Maintain and monitor statistical data
  • Prepare reports and assess initiatives
  • Handle daily records and scheduling
  • Communicate with builders, applicants, consultants, HCRA, and enforcement or regulatory bodies as needed
  • Support Tarion’s risk-based underwriting, inspection, and consumer protection programs

Requirements

  • Three to five years of construction-related experience, preferably involving freehold residential construction methods
  • A minimum of a community college graduation with a building science or construction-related diploma
  • Practical residential construction experience covering structural systems, HVAC, plumbing, and building envelopes
  • Technical knowledge of building science, warranty risk, underwriting risk, and the links between construction practices, claim outcomes, builder competency, and future risk
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, technical specifications, inspection reports, warranty assessment reports, and consultant reports
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment
  • Strong communication, observation, negotiation, problem-solving, analytical, and conflict-resolution skills
  • Ability to protect confidential information, exercise sound judgment and discretion, and collaborate effectively
  • Ability to work empathetically and accessibly while using effective communication in confrontational or stressful situations
  • Excellent time-management and interpersonal skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and construction practices in Ontario
  • Above-average keyboarding and computer skills in Microsoft Office and internet-based environments
  • Outgoing, self-motivated approach with the ability to make decisions based on practical building knowledge
  • Valid Class G driver’s licence and reliable transportation
  • Access to a high-speed internet connection in a home office
  • Ontario Building Code BCIN qualifications in Legal (general) and Part 9 (home) are considered an asset
