Solar Performance Engineer (Hybrid)

Monitor, model, and improve Blue Sky Utility and Nofar Energy’s utility-scale and distributed solar portfolio. Develop scalable analytics, reporting, and performance tools to support fleet growth.

Description

  • Evaluate daily and weekly production across utility-scale and distributed PV sites against weather-adjusted expectations
  • Diagnose underperformance at the site, inverter, combiner or recombiner, string, and tracker levels using SCADA and DAS data
  • Monitor and triage inverter faults, tracker stow or follow issues, and communication failures
  • Provide O&M vendors with documented performance data when escalating issues
  • Keep real-time fleet-health dashboards current in Metabase, Power BI, or comparable platforms
  • Develop scalable alarms, monitoring tools, exception reports, and automated alerts
  • Create and maintain loss-waterfall analyses for availability, curtailment, soiling, clipping, degradation, and wiring or DC losses
  • Calculate contractual availability and performance-ratio measures under O&M and PPA agreements
  • Query and transform large time-series datasets with SQL and PostgreSQL
  • Automate recurring reports using Python and pandas
  • Apply AI tools to data cleaning, script development, and report generation while checking output quality
  • Develop and maintain expected-generation models with PVsyst, SAM, PlantPredict, or internal modeling tools
  • Adjust models for as-built conditions, equipment changes, degradation curves, and shading or soiling assumptions
  • Contribute to P50 and P90 production forecasts and budget-to-actual variance reviews
  • Compare model assumptions with operating results and improve models over time
  • Work with O&M vendors on performance-guarantee true-ups and dispute resolution
  • Provide procurement and engineering teams with equipment-reliability analysis
  • Contribute to technical due diligence for acquisitions and portfolio expansion
  • Present analysis to internal teams and, when needed, asset owners and investors

Requirements

  • Two to three years of experience in solar performance engineering, asset management, O&M, or a related renewable-energy analytics role
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, renewable energy, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • Working knowledge of PV fundamentals, including inverter operation, string and central architectures, trackers, revenue metering, irradiance, temperature, and soiling
  • Practical experience with AlsoEnergy PowerTrack or a comparable SCADA, DAS, or historian platform
  • Familiarity with the PowerTrack API for automated reporting and data extraction
  • Proficiency in SQL for querying large datasets
  • Working ability with Python, pandas, and plotting libraries for analysis and automation
  • Familiarity with PVsyst, SAM, PlantPredict, or similar performance-modeling tools, or strong quantitative skills and willingness to learn
  • Ability to interpret electrical single-line diagrams and site-layout or LBD drawings
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to turn unstructured data into clear explanations for nontechnical stakeholders
  • Self-directed approach and comfort taking ownership of ambiguous problems
  • Comfort using AI tools, LLMs, and coding assistants while independently validating generated output
  • Experience troubleshooting Modbus registers or analyzing inverter fault codes is preferred
  • Exposure to BESS performance and dispatch data is preferred
  • Experience with Metabase, Power BI, or Tableau is preferred
  • Familiarity with O&M contracts, availability guarantees, and liquidated-damages calculations is preferred

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Short-term disability coverage
  • Life insurance
