Software Engineering Manager, Aerospace and Defense

Lead software teams building mission-critical aerospace and defense systems at Sierra Space. Manage delivery, engineering standards, budgets, and technical quality.

Description

  • Lead software engineering teams building mission-critical software for aerospace and defense programs.
  • Supervise, mentor, set performance expectations for, and review software engineers.
  • Turn functional plans into operational plans and establish development, testing, and deployment procedures.
  • Adapt Agile, Scrum, Kanban, or DevOps practices to aerospace software projects.
  • Manage the software development lifecycle, version control, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ensure adherence to aerospace software, quality, cybersecurity, and organizational standards.
  • Oversee development budgets, resource planning, and investments in engineering tools.
  • Improve code quality, performance, maintainability, and reliability for mission-critical systems.
  • Lead organizational changes involving engineering methods, tools, and workflows.
  • Explain technical concepts, project progress, risks, and trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Promote collaboration, innovation, accountability, and disciplined engineering practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Several years of relevant software engineering experience, including substantial technical or leadership experience.
  • Broad knowledge of Agile, Scrum, Kanban, and DevOps practices.
  • Experience managing software development lifecycles, version control systems, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Working knowledge of aerospace software standards, including DO-178B/C, NASA-STD-7150.2, NASA-STD-8739, RTCA/DO-278, and The Aerospace Corporation’s ToR-2011/2023.
  • Working knowledge of quality standards such as AS9100, ISO, and CMMI.
  • Ability to turn software engineering plans into operational plans.
  • Experience managing multiple software engineering teams and directly supervising engineers.
  • Strong communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required for employment involving an active U.S. security clearance.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks and aerospace or defense compliance requirements.
  • Preferred: Python and React experience.
  • Preferred: Python FastAPI experience.
  • Preferred: JIRA and Confluence experience.
  • Preferred: Experience with GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket.
  • Preferred: AWS and cloud-native development experience.
  • Preferred: Docker and Kubernetes experience.
  • Preferred: Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
