Software Engineer 3, Ground Systems — ULA, Centennial, Colorado

Develop command-and-control software for United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan rockets. Build and maintain real-time systems used in manufacturing, testing, and launch operations.

Description

  • Develop and maintain software for command, control, and monitoring of the Vulcan launch vehicle’s avionics and electrical ground support equipment.
  • Apply modern design principles to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, Technology Architects, QA, and Automation teams in an Agile environment.
  • Design, develop, and test software solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership and hands-on development for operational and enabling capabilities with hard real-time requirements.
  • Independently define and develop solutions with minimal direction.
  • Lead, guide, and train less experienced engineers.
  • Help deliver mission-critical software for launch vehicle manufacturing, preflight testing, and launch countdowns.
  • Support launch events by remotely shadowing launch operations teams.
  • Design, develop, operate, and maintain software, firmware, and computing systems.
  • Integrate software with launch systems and take ownership of assigned programs, projects, or project components.
  • Apply software development life cycle standards, processes, procedures, and tools.
  • Create engineering applications, including display, mechanical control, and electrical control systems for rocket operations.
  • Collaborate with customers, suppliers, application users, and technical and support personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university.
  • At least 4 years of related professional experience.
  • Experience working on an Agile development team.
  • Experience independently designing, developing, and delivering solutions to complex software and hardware problems.
  • Experience presenting hardware and software system architectures and designs to internal audiences and external customers.
  • Experience authoring, executing, and reviewing software across the full software development life cycle.
  • Experience with object-oriented design and programming languages.
  • Experience with C or C++.
  • Experience with software configuration management practices.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies.
  • Experience with Test-Driven Development.
  • Experience applying software design principles.
  • Experience with configuration management practices and tools such as Git.
  • Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery.

  • Preferred experience designing and architecting software for complex solutions.
  • Preferred experience serving as a technical lead on software development efforts.
  • Preferred experience guiding, training, or mentoring less experienced engineers.
  • Preferred experience with Python.
  • Preferred experience with real-time Linux systems, timing-critical hardware and software, secure software development, command-and-control systems for ground support or industrial control applications, or aerospace, launch, or defense systems.
  • Preferred: experience with real-time Linux-based operating systems
  • Preferred: expertise developing and troubleshooting timing-critical hardware and software systems
  • Preferred: experience with secure software development practices
  • Preferred: experience with command-and-control software for ground support equipment, industrial control systems, or similar safety-critical applications
