Senior Structural Engineer Level 4 – Newport News Onsite

Lead structural engineering for HII propulsion plants supporting aircraft carriers, battleships, and nuclear-powered ships. Analyze naval structures and contribute to their lifetime engineering and modernization.

Description

  • Support structural engineering work for propulsion plants
  • Create structural designs for new aircraft carriers, aircraft carrier modernization, a new battleship class, and standard Navy valve systems
  • Research and define structural engineering specifications for metallic, non-metallic, and composite materials
  • Conduct structural analyses across structural, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, power plant, armament, HVAC, equipment, and maintenance systems
  • Evaluate damage tolerance, durability, design allowables, and structural models
  • Perform dynamics and loads, stability and stress, fatigue, and thermal analyses
  • Prepare engineering calculation reports and review structural analysis reports
  • Escalate area-of-cognizance issues to NNS management and the Navy customer
  • Work with construction teams, engineering disciplines, value stream customers, and designers
  • Train and support the management of junior engineers
  • Communicate engineering resolutions and authorize CAD model changes

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 9 years of relevant exempt experience, or a master’s degree with 7 years of relevant professional experience, or a Ph.D. with 4 years of experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • U.S. citizenship is required
  • Proficiency in finite element analysis using FEMAP and ABAQUS
  • Proficiency with textbook-based hand calculations
  • Experience preparing engineering calculation reports and reviewing structural analysis reports
  • Ability to train and assist with managing junior engineers
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervisory oversight
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • Experience using Siemens TEAMCENTER, FEMAP, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, MATHCAD, and other engineering or design software
  • Ability to work with designers to communicate engineering resolutions and approve CAD model changes
